Glasco Sun, March 27, 1919, page 1: "Martha Halderman was born in Morgantown, W.V. March 4, 1854 and died at her home in California, Pa., Feb. 21, 1919, aged 64 years, 11 months and 17 days. When 2 years of age her family after a short stay in Missouri and Ohio, moved to Uniontown, Pa. where she lived until 15 years of age and then moved back to West. Va. She was married Dec. 25, 1872 to Simeon Oliver Everley. They lived at Dawson Station, Pa. for 18 months, then moved with their little girl Zora to Cloud County, Kansas. Here on the Kansas homestead, eight and one fourth miles from Glasco, they lived many happy years. Here through pioneer hardships and successes they lived and five other little girls and six boys blessed their home. Mr. and Mrs. Everely were builders. They helped in the organization of a Sunday school and a class and also helped to build Bethel Church and community. They loved the old Church and worked with it through prosperity and adversity. Mr. Everley died in Sept. of 1912, and was buried in Bethel cemetery. In 1913 Mrs. Everley moved to Salina, where she remained four years while her children were attending the Kansas Wesleyan University. In October of 1917, Mrs. Everley was again married, to Dr. J.R. Smith of the State Normal School of Pennsylvania. Dr. Smith was a childhood schoolmate of Martha Halderman. Her life at California, Pa. with the companion of her late years, was among the happiest and best of her life. Martha Halderman was converted in the Methodist Protestant church at Uniontown, Pa. when 11 years old. She joined the Presbyterian church and remained a member of it until she was 15 years old. She moved to West Va. where there was no Presbyterian church, and there she joined the Methodist church. She remained a member of the Methodist church at Bethel until she transferred to California, Pa. in 1917. She leaves a husband, Dr. J.B. Smith, Registrar of the State Normal of Pa., a mother, Mrs. Martha L. Halderman, of Morgantown, West Va., who is in her 90th year; twelve children: Mrs. Zora Casselman of Boynton, Okla.; Mrs. Lila Willars, of Glasco, Kans.; Mrs. Oliver Bullen of Concordia, Kans.; Golden Everley of Glasco; O.V. Everley of Campo, Colo.; Howard Everley of Garden City, Mrs. Laura Buckland of Glasco, Victor Everley and Loyal Everley of Glasco, Marion Everley, Opal Everley and Mrs. Merl Whitman of California, Pa.; also two brothers, Allen Halderman of Enterprise and Frank Halderman of Morgantown, West Va.; also 22 grandchildren, besides other relatives and a host of friends to mourn her death. .......California to her old home near Glasco, where it lay in state until interment on Tuesday at the bethel cemetery. Rev. J.G. Roberts of Allen, Kansas, conducted the funeral.
