Description	:	Mrs. Mary (Barney) Haug, a resident of Nemaha and Brown counties, died Saturday morning, July 16, at 7:30 in Wichita. She had been in failing health for some time and had reached the age of 68 years, two months and one day. Death was due to a coronary occlusion due to coronary arteriosclerosis. They lived on a farm near St.... Read More	Mrs. Mary (Barney) Haug, a resident of Nemaha and Brown counties, died Saturday morning, July 16, at 7:30 in Wichita. She had been in failing health for some time and had reached the age of 68 years, two months and one day. Death was due to a coronary occlusion due to coronary arteriosclerosis. She was born May 15, 1892 , near Hiawatha, KS, the daughter of John Jacob Weidman and Mrs. Minnie Weidman. She was married to Barney Haug in St. Mary's Church, St. Benedict on May 24, 1910. They lived on a farm near St. Benedict where five children were born. The other seven were born on a farm southwest of Baileyville. In recent years, she spent time with her children. The past year she resided in Baileyville. After having a sale, she spent the last three weeks in Wichita. Mrs Haug was a faithful wife, a kind and loving mother and a highly esteemed friend and neighbor. To many people she was known as "Mom" Haug. She was a devout member of the Catholic faith. Her husband passed away on July 30, 1941; a daughter Malita, in 1919; and a son Leander in 1943. Those left to mourn her passing are seven daughters: Edna Hastings, Denver, CO; Loretta Baker of Wichita; Lela Brooks of Newark, CA; Evelyn Henry of Wichita; Geraldine Christie of Los Angles, CA; Rita Becker of Benton, KS; and Irene Rowe of Weatherford, OK; three sons, Albert of Vermillion, Raymond of Livermore, CA; and James of Aurora, CO. Two sisters, Mrs. Madge Green of Orland, CA; and Mrs. Kate Weller of Downey, CA: 32 grandchildren a 5 great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends. Her body was moved from the Flanagan-Hunt Funeral Home, Wichita to the Droge Funeral Home, St. Benedict, which took charge of the funeral services which were held on Tuesday, July 19, at 9:00 a.m. in St. Mary's Church. Internment was in St. Mary's Cemetery, St. Benedict. The pallbearers were: Vernice McCaffery, Frank and Louis Wenger, Gilbert, Wilbert, and Lawrence Haug. July 19, 1960 - Courier-Tribune, Seneca, Kansas: Dorothy Marie (Congdon) Adams, wrote this about her grandmother Mary Agnes Widman Mary Agnes Widman, born to immigrated German and Swiss parents. Her mother Minnie M. Kaserman, married John "Jacob" Widman on 06 Feb 1876 at Spring Creek, Brown, Kansas. Minnie was born on 29 Dec 1854 at Alton, Madison, Illinois, to Johnnes "John" Kasermann and Margaretha "Maggie" (Bernreuther) Kasermann, John was born on 03 Feb 1823 at Batterkinden, Bern, Switzerland and Maggie was born on 15 Dec 1821 at Bayern, Traunstein, Bavaria, Germany, they both spoke German. John and Maggie immigrated on 12 Mar 1852. With her parents Minnie came to Kansas when but a mere child of 2 years of age, with the family located near Fairview, Kansas, where Minnie grew from childhood to womanhood. John "Jacob" Widman's mother, Katherine Widman came to America. After, the death of Katherine's husband and having many older married sons, one whom inherited the farm. The Estate was settled and Katherine's decision was made. Their was free land in America, remaining would have left Katherine without - land. Due to over - crowding, all land was taken. Katherine would have lived a very poor life in Germany. Has been said they were from northwestern part of Germany - Unknown. Katherine Widman is buried next to Minnie and John "Jacob" Widman. Powhatan, Kansas. John "Jacob" Widman was said to have came from northeast Bolariva Mountains (East Germany) near west Cezhanakavia, western borders the high mountains. Has been said that John "Jacob" and his brother, founded the first town of Powhatan, Kansas, they settled southwest of Hiawatha, Kansas, at Dutch Windmill, half mile east; and half mile west where homes were built, this wooden windmill was a landmark in early days. Remember Powhatan town was moved 3 or 4 times before it's permit location today 1986. Due to water wells going dry. The Dutch Windmill had a huge rock storage tank, for all settlers to water their horses there. Unknown whom built this windmill or the huge rock storage tank. Mary Agnes Widman was fearful of Indians, especially in her early days working out west thirty - five miles from her home, at St. Benedict, Kansas, when she was about 14 years old, in 1907. She lived while there with her uncle August Droge, across the road from the Catholic Church, called St. Marys. Much of the building was being done to the St. Mary's Church. Mary Agnes went to help out, by cooking, washing, and serving meals to those refurnishing the Church. Her uncle August Droge was a craftsman with wood. August built the Pews at this time for St. Mary's Church. August Droge, was ask many times to do wood project for this Church, he had a huge farm across the road west. St. Mary's Church sets high on a hill, with a very high steeple. A very impressive Church that has served our Catholic descendants well over the years. Farmlands are of sandy loam about this church, farther south the soils become sticky Clay. (Note: Mary Agnes Widman was not the nieces of August Droge. August's wife was Karoline Widman the daughter of Johann "Karl" Widman, Karl is the brother of John "Jacob" Widman. Johann "Karl" Widman stay in Germany and Karoline and her brother (Karl) came to America on their own. Karoline stayed with Jacob and Minnie Widman, Karoline was about 13 or 14 years old at the time she arrived in Kansas. Karoline was born 22 Dec 1872 and Mary Agnes Widman was born 15 May 1892, so there is about 20 years difference in their ages, Mary just called them Aunt and Uncle, but they where really 1st cousins.) Mary Agnes, five brothers lived at Powhatan, Kansas. Margaret (Maggie/ Madge) lived two miles east of Powhatan, Kansas, after her husband death she moved to California with her daughter. Carolina lived southwest of Powhatan, Kansas. some distances, due west of Horton, Kansas, about eight miles. Kate lived at Hiawatha, Kansas, Baileyville, Kansas, and Downey, California. Mary Agnes never returned to Powhatan, in 1910 married a Catholic Bernard (Barney) Haug, they lived St.Benedict and Baileyville, Kansas. For thirty years, Mary and Bernard Haug acquired a large farm and had twelve children. Much clearing of the land was done, Barney under tiled a pasture acreage then, for water drainage to the creek which flowed through their land. Used a Steam engine to saw timber logs for materials to build buildings on this farm. Always planted a corn field, for livestock winter feeds. Had cattle, horses, sheep, goats, chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese and lots of pigs. Barney died while on a fishing trip south of this farm, of drowning. Mary had six of the twelve children still home, the others were married, working - out, and in the Armed Services. Mary completed payments on their farm, she kept the farm operating another twenty years; and educated the children living at home. Mary Agnes was a slim and tall person. She was devoted to her Catholic Faith. Her Goal was Catholic son - in- laws. Her descendants should praise her task, since her parents were not Catholic. Mary learned to be a midwife, helped deliver several of her own grandchildren. All Irene and Rita's children she was nurse at delivery time. (Her eldest grandchild Dorothy was there when Bernice Becker was delivered). Mary had 32 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren at the time of her death. Plus a pair of Siamese Twins, boys connected at the breasts. She had more born after her death in the 1970's and 1980's, and great grandchildren being born. Many beautiful faces to remind us of Mary Agnes and Bernard Pius Haug, our Ancestors.
