DEO PASSED AWAY EARLY YESTERDAY; 86 YEARS OLD Mrs. Anson C. Deo passed away very suddenly at her home here yesterday morning. She had retired as usual the night before in her usual health but when her son, Charley, went to call her for breakfast, he found that she had passed away during the night. Grandma Deo was a pioneer citizen of this place. For several years she had been in failing health due to her advanced years. Last Sunday was her 86th birthday and she was then entertained at the home of her son, A.A. Deo, and stood the trip over there nicely. The passing of this good old lady marks the passing on one who might well be called, Stratford's grand old lady. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Stratford Courier April 23, 1925 Mary A. McCrary was born at Elk River, Clinton County, Iowa, April 12, 1839. She passed away at her home here having attained the advanced old age of 86 years and 3 days. She was the second white child to be born in Clinton County and she was the last of a family of ten sisters. She was married to Anson C. Deo at Elk River, February 22, 1856. To this union was born six children, two of which, Claude and Tat, preceded the mother in death. The husband and father passed away on May 28, 1907. Those who remain to mourn her passing are: Albert A. and Charles A., both of Stratford; Harry H., of Peterson and Mrs. Hallie Dawson of Des Moines. There are also six grandchildren and three great grandchildren, other relatives and many hosts of friends who are bereaved at her demise. Grandma Deo came with her husband to the old Hooks Point settlement in the fall of 1870 and soon after their arrival they engaged in the operation of an inn in that frontier settlement. They remained at that place until the spring of 1881 when the town of Stratford started with the coming of the railroad through this section of Iowa and they opened a hotel here and remained in that business until 1914, when advanced age caused deceased to retire from it. Grandma Deo knew more of the early history of this section, perhaps, than any person living at this time. The family lived here almost continuously from the time this town was started and she had seen its little ups and downs, as well as its dark and its sunny sides. She was always busy and always cheerful no matter how great the adversities. For a long time she had been suffering with the infirmities of old age and it was during these last years that she reaped the benefit of a real mother's love for her children for she has been the care of her son, Charles, when enfeebling age made it imperative that she have the help and assistance her condition demanded as well as the love of a good son, whom she had mothered, and who has nursed and cared for her through these last years with a real and manly devotion not equaled in many. She was Stratford's grand old lady and she will be missed here as the years roll on. Funeral services were held from the home Friday afternoon and were conducted by Rev. C.H. Flesher. The remains were interred beside those of her husband in Oakwood Cemetery.
