Here closed a helpful and beautiful career. Those who knew in life the brave and tender, the unselfish and loyal, the bright and amiable Mary Wood now lovingly lay upon her grave the tribute of their praise and tears. In Franklinville, New York, began this lovely life. The oldest of ten children, she in early years cheerfully adjusted to her tender form burdens that weigh heavily upon more matured shoulders. There was need of special endeavors and sacrifice, but the labors were inspired by a love for those about her, and a spirit of helpfulness that yielded only at the close of life. As a mere child she was known as "little mother" because of her cheerful assumption of maternal cares. At the threshold of womanhood a blighting shadow fell athwart her pathway, when at one fell stroke of the grim destroyer visions of a happy home and sweet companionship were cruelly dashed away. Subsequently she gave her hand in marriage to one some twenty years her senior. For years she loyally acted the part of wife. It is best to speak but briefly of this unhappy period. Suffice it to say that a character of less strength, a disposition less amiable and a spirit less brave would have been dwarfed, blighted, crushed by the association with one who responded not to the noble sentiments or the unquenchable yearnings of the noble wife he could not understand, much less appreciate. And still she struggled on. To compass the first demands of existence? to simply clothe and feed the body and gratify the grosser ambitions of womanhood? O, no. The desire to be useful was ever uppermost. A teacher's calling had been adopted, and hundreds will testify to the helpfulness of this woman to whom the monthly stipend was simply an incident. Her soul was in the work. She wanted to do all she could for those under her care, and in the personal interests closely encompassing the heart she ever felt an absorbing interest. Several years since she became aroused over the subject of educating the Indians. A situation at the Santee Agency School was secured, and the very best powers of bright and trained intellect and a heart in sympathy with the most needful of God's creatures were enlisted in this work. Doubtless her interest in the fidelity to these duties hastened the close of life. Her paths may easily be traced by kindly deeds and devoted friends. Instances innumerable of her abounding love and sympathy are known. She came home from Des Moines to die. At the capital city she was for months an honored guest of a family who acknowledge a debt that a life of devotion could not pay. While in California two years since Mrs. Wood heard of the distress of this family, whom she had not previously known. She went to them, and it is confessed by the father and mother that she saved the life of at least one of their children, and God only knows the comfort she gave and all the sorrow she ??????. Her elder teachers have feelingly testified their admiration and love for her during her later days, and the most touching evidence of appreciation of a noble soul and great heart have been given by others in various quarters. Farewell to thee, Mary Wood, The world is better for thy service. Peace now abides with thy undaunted soul in a realm where hearts are read, and where thy sacrifices and thy love for the heart-burdened of earth are appreciated in all their fullness. Mrs. Wood was a sister of Mrs. W. F. (Juliet) Carlton. Between these sisters existed the most tender bond of sympathy, and Mrs. Carlton now feels sadly bereft. Another sister, Mrs. E. D. (Frances) Carlton, died less than a year ago. Of a family of ten children only three survive. The aged parents still live in the old home in Franklinville, New York, and this blow bows the silvered heads still lower, and still farther increases their possessions in the world beyond. Mrs. Wood was for weeks a great sufferer, but she died as she had lived bravely, patiently, true to her faith and confident of the future. *The Spirit Lake Beacon, April 25, 1890. ----------
