The Funeral Services Sunday Morning At 10 O'clock From Moyer Chapel Mrs. R. B. Picken passed away this morning at 1:30 oclock at the Jefferson County hospital. Death being caused by a tumor on the brain from which she has been suffering for the past year. She was a patient in Iowa City for two months and was then returned to the Jefferson County hospital hence to her home, 4 1-2 miles north of the city and a week ago Sunday was again brought to the hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10 oclock Sunday morning, the body remaining at the Hoskins Funeral Home until 9 oclock when the funeral party will leave for Moyer chapel, north of the city, where the rites will be conducted by Rev. Harvey E. Butler. Interment will be made in Evergreen cemetery. Mrs. Picken was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Summers and was born in this county, September 19, 1889 (sic. 1879 ???). She was married 24 years ago to R. B. Picken and they moved to the farm on which they now reside and which has always been their home. She is survived by her husband and the following children all at home, Raymond 21, Merle 18, Alex 15, Marie 8 and Robert 4 and the following brothers and sisters all residents of this county, Mrs. Martha McIntire, Mrs. Emma Hadley, Mrs. Bell Parrish, Herbert, George and William Summers. ----------------------- This marriage notice was found in a scrapbook of clipping in the Fairfield Public Library. Unfortunately, it was not sourced as to publication name or date: "Cupid Still at Work The home of Joseph Summers of Black Hawk Tp., was the scene of a beautiful wedding Wednesday eve, September 28, 1904, when their eldest daughter Eleanor (sic) was united in marrage to R. B. Pickens (sic). Rev. Wylie performed the ceremony after which the company retired to the dining room where an elaborate wedding feast awaited them. The loveliness of the bride was enhanced by a wedding gown of white silk mull. The groom was attired in a neat black suit. That they were a handsome looking couple as they stood before the assembled company and took the vows that united them for life, was voiced by all. Burse and Ellen, as they are familiarly called, start out in life with good prospects. Ellen is the eldest daughter and a universal favorite among all. She is of meek disposition, posessing womanly endowment in high degree. The groom in the youngest son of Mrs. Lifel Spencer and is a young man of gentlemanly bearing, correct moral habits and sterling worth, and is to be congratulated on his wisdom in choosing a life companion. The chivalry crowd made their appearance and made things lively for a time. The bridal party left of the midnight train for a visit in St. Louis after which they will be at home to their friends on their farm five miles north of Fairfield. We doff our old cap and extend our best wishes. Anon." ----------- Note: A daughter was Marie Eleanor Williams, wife of Francis A. "Willie" Williams. Her memorial can be found in the Santa Fe National Cemetery: Marie E Williams. A son was Joseph Alexander Picken. His memorial can be found as: Joseph A Picken. Most Fairfield area references to him called him "Alex", but his headstone clearly shows the first given name to be Joseph. He is buried with his wife, Esther Peterson Picken.
