MARY CHELTON DIED ON THURSDAY Mrs. Mary Ellen Chelton, one of this community's best known and most highly respected residents, died at her home at "Makepeace," on Johnson's Creek road yesterday, Thursday afternoon, following several days' illness. Death was due to a heart attack. She had been in ill health for a number of years and this week suffered a severe attack and it was thought for a time that she was threatened with pneumonia. Her death came as a great shock to her many friends throughout the community. Mrs. Chelton was the daughter of the late William C. and Sarah Jane Sterling, and a member of one of Somerset county's oldest families. She was born December 18th, 1853, and was 82 of age last December. She was twice married, her first husband being Captain Luther Sterling. Some time after his death she married again, her second husband being Captain William H. Chelton. For more than sixty years Mrs. Chelton had resided at "Makepeace," one of the oldest houses in this country. For the last twenty years, two of her sons, Mr. Edmund Sterling and Mr. Elijah Sterling and a grandson, Mr. Kirk W. Sterling, had lived there with her. She was one of the oldest living members of Asbury M. E. Church and was deeply interested in the affairs of her church and community. She was a devout Christian, and her fine character, noble disposition, and gentle manner endeared her to everyone with whom she came into contact. She is survived by thirty-six living descendants. Eight children, Mrs. Bertha Lawson, of Philadelphia, Pa., Mrs. Ella Pinto, Mrs. Marie Sterling, Mrs. Daisy Wilson, Mrs. Sadie Sterling, Mr. Archie Sterling, Mr. Edmund Sterling, Mr. Elijah Sterling, all of Crisfield, fifteen grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. One sister, Mrs. A. J. Riggin, of Crisfield, also survives. Funeral services will be held from her home, "Makepeace," on Johnson's Creek Road, tomorrow, Saturday afternoon at three o'clock, conducted by the Rev. J. T. Rowlenson, pastor of Asbury M. E. Church.
