Born in Ireland Mrs. Mary O'Donnell, one of the pioneers of Carroll county, died at her home on Carroll street Sunday at the ripe old age of 86 years. The deceased had been in poor health for years, but was able to be about the house until last November when she began to fail, and passed gracefully away Sunday evening. Death was due to her advanced age. Mary Holland was born February 2nd. 1839, in County Cork, Ireland, and came to America at the age of three with her parents, living for a time in Rhode Island, from thence moving to Illinois, twelve years later. She was married to John O'Donnell at Freeport, Illinois, and came to Iowa May 18,1875, settling on a farm at Maple River. Fourteen years ago, Mrs. O'Donnell moved to the home on Carroll street, where she was tenderly cared for by her daughter, Miss Nellie. Mr. and Mrs. O'Donnell were among the pioneers of Carroll county, and last Wednesday was the 50th anniversary of their advent into the county. She has been a member of St. Joseph parish most of her life, having been one of the charter members, and was faithful and devout in all the duties of the church. On February 2nd, she celebrated her 86th birthday, and all her children were home for the happy event. Eleven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. O'Donnell, and three with their father have passed away. Those left to mourn a mother's loss are Michael of Boone; John of Mitchell, South Dakota; Terrence of Kansas City, Missouri; James C. and George of Carroll; Thomas B. of Anthon; Edward J. of Sioux City, and Miss Nellie at home, all of whom have been called here by her death. The funeral will be held at 9 o'clock tomorrow morning at St. Joseph's church, and will be conducted by Rev. Father Stephen Butler, and she will be laid to rest in the parish cemetery. (Carroll Herald Newspaper, Carroll, Iowa 25 Mar 1925) ANOTHER PIONEER IS CALLED BY DEATH Mrs. Mary O'Donnell Died Last Sunday - Funeral Services Held This Morning Mrs. Mary O'Donnell passed away at her home Sunday, March 22, after being in failing health for several weeks. She was one of the pioneer women of the county and had lived a busy, useful life. Mrs. O'Donnell, whose maiden name was Mary Holland, was born in Ireland, February 2, 1839. When but three years old her parents moved to America. After a perilous trip of eleven weeks during which time the ship was tossed about by wind and storm, they landed and took up their abode at Newport, R.I. When Mrs. O'Donnell was 15 years old the family moved to Illinois, where they settled in the northern part of the state. Chicago, then nothing but a trading post for the early settlers, was their nearest town. Her marriage to John O'Donnell took place at Freeport, Ill. March 18, 1875, they moved to Carroll county on their farm near Maple River, which she still retained. Fourteen years ago she moved to her present home in this city. Mr. O'Donnell died in July, 1892, and of the eleven children born to Mr. and Mrs. O'Donnell the following survive: M. O'Donnell of Boone; John O'Donnell of Mitchell, S.D.,; Terence O'Donnell of Kansas City; James O'Donnell of Carroll; T. B. O'Donnell of Anthon; E. J. O'Donnell of Sioux City; George O'Donnell and Nellie O'Donnell at home. One son William, died October 20, 1888. Margaret, (Mrs. F. J. Bromert) died January 28, 1919, and Mary O'Donnell died July 2, 1919. Mrs. O'Donnell lived to see her children grow to become influential members of the community. She was never so happy as when they were all assembled at her home. Her 86th birthday was celebrated a few weeks ago when all the children observed the day with their mother and made it a very happy one for her. During her entire life Mrs. O'Donnell was a devout member of the Catholic church. Funeral service were held this morning at 9 o'clock with a requiem high mass at the St. Joseph church, and burial was made in the St. Joseph cemetery. Relatives who attended the funeral from out-of-town were M. O'Donnell of Boone; John O'Donnell of Mitchell, S. D.; Mr. and Mrs. Terrence O'Donnell of Kansas City; T. B. O'Donnell of Anthon, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. E. J. O'Donnell of Sioux City; F. J. Bromert and children of Maple River; John Holland and son, Joseph of Austin, Ill,; M. Holland of Warren, Ill.; Mayme, Alyce and Martene O'Donnell of Boone. Friends from outside of Carroll who attended were Very Rev. T. J. McCarty of Sioux City; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Cusack of Missouri Valley, Ia.; Michael Hatton, Des Moines; Miss Alice Manning, Rockford, Ill.; L. D. Smith, Fremont, Neb.; A. L.
