Read More	Shocking Accident A Lady Killed on the Road by a Runaway Team On Sunday last one of the most shocking accidents, resulting in the death of Mrs. Hugh Ingram, of Bolinas, occurred in Ross Valley. Mr. C.A. Hooper, a gentleman temporarily stopping in San Rafael, took a livery team Sunday morning, and drove with his family, consisting of his wife, two children and two nurses, up to Mr. Liberty's ranch, at Lagunitas. He left Mrs. Hooper there and drove back in the afternoon. It was about five o'clock in the evening when he turned from the mountain road into Ross Valley, with his two children and nurses, and headed toward San Rafael. Just as he reached T. Reynold's place the team became in some way excited, and Mr. Hooper was unable to manage them. A buckle on one of the reins had caught in the saddle ring, and he could not guide the team. At Rocky Point they ran on the bank, and the carriage was upset. The five occupants were thrown out. they were all somewhat bruised, but no serious injury was sustained by either. The body of the carriage parted from the running gear, and the team started off with the wheels. While Mr. Hooper was picking up his children the team came running toward him, and he made an effort to catch them, but failed, and they wheeled and ran furiously up the valley. The awful catastrophe was yet to come. Near the head of the valley Mrs. Jesse Colwell, with her aged mother, Mrs. Jane Ingram, and Mrs. Colwell's little daughter, were jogging along in a buggy. Mrs. Colwell heard the noise of a team behind, but did not know it was driverless, and, all unconscious of danger, turned out, leaving a good road for passing. A little below the gate leading to Mrs. Tunstead's old homestead the team struck squarely against Mr. Colwell's buggy, and in an instant the three horses, the buggy, and the two ladies were lying in an indistinguishable mass. Mrs. Ingram sustained the brunt of the shock, and was almost instantly killed, breathing but a few moments. Mrs. Colwell was rendered insensible, and thrown under the buggy, while the little girl was slightly injured. The buggy horse was knocked down, and could not stir, and the span of horses which had caused the wreck stood still in the midst of the bodies and debris, just where the collision had stopped them. Mr. D. Sutherland had just turned down the valley from the Olema road in his buggy, and was an eye witness to the awful occurrence. He hastened to the spot. His first care was to remove the horses, fearing that if they moved, further injuries would result to the ladies who were lying unconscious at their feet. Very soon other men came to his aid. Mrs. Ingram was taken to the roadside, but so terrible were her injuries that she expired in a very few moments. Mr. Colwell soon regained her consciousness, and although stunned and seriously hurt, her only thought was for her poor mother. Mrs. Ingram was struck in the back by the pole, and the horses passed right over the buggy, stepping on her face. Mrs. Colwell was thrown under the buggy, a little to one side, which probably saved her life. The little girl was pitched forward out of harm's way. Mrs. Ingram had a frightful wound on her head, and one leg and one arm were broken. Dr. Dubois was immediately summoned, and rendered such aid as skill and humanity dictated. This awful accident has brought an incurable sorrow to a very large family, and cast a deep gloom over the entire neighborhoods where the deceased lady was known. Mr. and Mrs. Ingram were natives of the same town in Ireland, and the dates of their births were about six weeks apart. They seemed to have been born lovers, they were together in childhood and school days; in the bright morning of their childhood they pledged their troth to each other, marriage completed their union; in this relation they have walked together more than half a century and in all their long journey of more than three score years and then they have not been separated. Last week, after the funeral of Mrs. McCoy, who was a sister of Mr. McCurdy, a son-in law, the old couple came over to San Rafael to spend a few days with their daughter, Mrs. Colwell. They have six children, four resident in this county, Mrs. John Strain and Mrs. Samuel McCurdy, live at Bolinas, and the son Robert has always lived at home with his parents. A married daughter lives in Humboldt, and Archie, a son, in Chicago. The grief of the stricken family is utterly indescribable, and there is mourning in every family in Bolinas, where the sweet and tender ministries of Mrs. Ingram have been so long enjoyed, and where her symmetrical and lovely character was known to all. The remains were taken to Bolinas Tuesday for sepulture. Mrs. Strain, who came to San Rafael Monday, was so prostrated by grief that she was unable to return with the funeral cortege. It was feared that Mrs. Colwell was internally injured, but this happily proved untrue, and she is now doing well. Coroner Eden held an inquest Monday, the jury finding a verdict of accidental death. Hooper ran away and collided with a rig occupied by Mrs. Jesse Colwell her daughter and Mrs. Ingram, her mother. The Hooper family were thrown from their buggy when the team ran, and were considerably bruised. When the running horses clashed with the Colwell buggy, Mrs. Ingram was almost instantly killed and Mrs. Colwell was rendered unconscious. D. Sutherland, driving along the road, was an eye witness to the accident.
