February 24, 1927 - Newell Mirror - Mrs J.C. Brown, one of the pioneer women of this section of the state, died suddenly at her home Friday evening. She had been sick about a week but her condition not been considered critical. A consultation of physicians had been held Friday afternoon but at that time no trouble of a dangerous nature was discovered. She passed away with but a moment's warning at about 5:30 o'clock. Funeral services were held at the Congregational church at two o'clock Tuesday afternoon, concluded by the pastor, Dr E.H. Peatfield, and assisted by J.E. Holden, of Storm Lake a former pastor and long standing friend of the deceased. The church was crowded with sorrowing friends of the deceased and her family. Interment was made in the Newell cemetery. The following obituary was read by the pastor as part of the service. Mary Louisa Loomis was born in Kansas, August 30th, 1860, and passed peacefully away at her home in Newell Friday, February 18th, 1927 at the age of 66 years, 5 months and 19 days. When a small child, her parents moved to Wisconsin, later coming to Buena Vista county where she has made her home for the past 57 years. On December 20th, 1883, she was united in marriage to James C. Brown. For five years they made their home on the Brown homestead in Providence township, and then moved to Newell where they have since resided. Four children were born to this union - Mary E, wife of J.H. Williams of Storm Lake; James E of Newell; Alice I, wife of H.I. Hoskin of Sioux City; and Elsie M, wife of S.R. Couch, of Newell. Beside the husband and children she is also survived by three sisters and two brothers: Mrs Sarah Trickle, of Nemaha, Mrs Delila Cresap, of Valley City, ND, and Mrs Nellie Jackson, of Alta, Chas Loomis and John L. Loomis, of Nemaha, and one grandchild, Alice Marylin Couch. Today we lay her to rest, and in so doing we say "Good-bye" to one of the most faithful wives and devoted mothers that ever lived in Newell. Mrs Brown, Mother Brown, as she was affectionately called, was loved and trusted by all who knew her. She had ever a kind and charitable word for everybody, young and old alike found in her a true counselor and friend. She was among the most faithful and earnest members of the Newell Congregational church, and its associated organizations. No matter what the conditions were, if it was at all possible, she was always in her regular place in the sanctuary. She was also an honored member of the Order of Eastern Star and of the White Shrine, also of the Rebekahs and of the Women's Relief Corps. In all these organizations she will be sorely missed. But what is our loss is her gain, and we rejoice in this, that when the Master caller her, she was ready to respond, and today she waits just beyond the river to welcome her loved ones, as in God's own time they shall follow.
