Description	:	Mary Maria Hargin traveled with her family at the age of eight to Johnson County, Indiana, by wagon. There she later met and married Joseph Foxworthy. Read More	Mary Maria Hargin traveled with her family at the age of eight to Johnson County, Indiana, by wagon. There she later met and married Joseph Foxworthy. In 1854 after ten years of marriage, Mary and Joseph emigrated to "the wild prairie land" of Iowa, again traveling by wagon, and homesteaded one mile south of Malvern where they made their home for the next 54 years. Mary became a charter member of the Christian Church in Malvern and worked tirelessly for its support. Many ice cream socials were held on the church lawn over the years to provide financial support for the church. The Foxworthys had fourteen children with three dying in infancy. At the time of Mary's death, following a long illness due to heart trouble, eight of the children were still living. Joseph had died five months earlier after they had been married for 67 years. The Glenwood newspaper in Mary's obituary quoted a niece as saying, "Three elements in Aunt Mary's character that caused her to be so loved by all who knew her were her spirit of untiring industry, her bright and happy outlook on life, and her beautiful Christian faith. Early in life she learned to help support a large family. She learned to love the long hours spinning at the loom. Her hands did nearly all the work of clothing a large family. In her late years, she plied her knitting needles constantly when not engaged in other household duties or in reading. She loved to read, meditating on the lives of great and good people, contributing to her own nobility of character." Note: The pioneer existence of families like the Foxworthys on the prairies of Iowa even more than 65 years after their arrival was a stark contrast to the opulent lifestyle of those who traveled on the Titanic which plunged to its resting place in the North Atlantic just one day after Mary died. The April 22, 1912 front page of the Glenwood newspaper carried a two-column story of the "Titanic" with the headline: "Notes of the Great Disaster." "Almost everyone is talking about the terrible disaster off the Newfoundland coast. As details are accumulating, the terror and calamity grow larger. It is now claimed that 1,601 lives were lost and only 745 passengers were saved. There is no question of doubt but that the head officers of the ship are criminally liable for this, the most terrible of sea disasters. Capt. Smith was notified and fully warned that heavy icebergs were in his vicinity, and yet he increased the speed of the vessel rather than slacken it. "Col. Gracie of the U. S. Army said Capt. Smith made his boasts just before the disaster that the ship had run 546 miles in twenty-four hours and that they would beat that distance during the next twenty-four hours. Notwithstanding this warning and knowing he was sailing in very dangerous waters, he ordered all possible steam and speed in order to surpass all rivals in quickness of the run from South Hampton to New York. The Senate of the U. S. is investigating the disaster, but it is a clear case of locking the barn door after the horse is stolen."
