OLSON DIES AT DAUGHTERS HOME IN JEWELL Johanna Mathilda Peterson was born July 20, 1853, in Skede, Jönköping län, Småland, Sweden. In 18_8, at the age of 15, she came to America with her parents and two sisters, coming directly to Dayton. After a few years she went to Marshalltown to make her home. There she was married to John Engstrom in 1874. To this union were born two children, John Franklin and Sadie, now Mrs. Gilbert Lindstedt of Marshalltown. Eight years later Mr. Engstrom passed away. In 1885, she was united in marriage to Carl August Olson, also of Marshalltown. To this union were born two sons and five daughters. In 1896, the family moved to a farm near Boxholm where they lived for ten years. In 1906, they moved to the vicinity of Burnside and in 1909 to Dayton where Mrs. Olson made her home until 1933 when illness forced her to make her home with her children. She passed this life last Friday, March 5, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Henry Abrahamson of Jewell, at the age of 83 years, 7 months and 15 days. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1915, and three children, Emily, who died in infancy, Addie, wife of Martin Freed, in 1920, and John Franklin Engstrom, who died in Portland, Oregon in 1932. She is survived by six children, Mrs. Gilbert Lindstedt of Marshalltown, Mrs. Earl Manchester of Burnside, Mrs. Henry Abrahamson and Emil Olson of Jewell, Mrs. Wesley Peterson of Stratford and Arthur Olson of Fort Dodge, also one stepson, Oscar Olson of Pueblo, Colorado. She leaves also 18 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, many nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends. Mrs. Olson was confirmed in the Swedish Lutheran Church in her girlhood, and transferred her membership to the Lutheran Church of Dayton when she came there to make her home. She has been a faithful member of the church, taking part in its activities and attending its services regularly until her last illness forced her to leave her home. Her funeral was held Monday at the Lutheran Church, her pastor, Rev. Ekeberg, conducting the services. Six grandsons acted as pallbearers, and she was laid to rest beside her husband in the Dayton cemetery. Mrs. Olson's was a long and useful Christian life, characterized by unselfishness and a willingness to do for others. Her death brings a keen sense of loss to all those in whose hearts she had made a place for herself during her life of service.
