Mrs. Matilda Hamner, age 88 years, a resident of Atchison county for fifty-six years, and a resident of Atchison for almsot fifty years, died at her home, 517 Atchison street, at 8:30 this morning. While she had been declining, because of old age, for several months, death resulted for a fall which fractured her hip, a week ago yesterday. Her daughter, Mrs. Sam Walters, had helped her to a lounge and had gone from the room. Mrs. Hamner attempted to get up and walk across the room, fell and received the injury which resulted in her death. Mrs. Hamner was a remarkable woman: the sort of a woman necessary to make a successful pioneer. Her maiden name was Matilda Sprowl. She was born in Hawkins county, Tenn., in 1822, and when a child moved to Indiana, where she was marrried in 1840 to John Hamner. While living in Indiana, Mrs. Hamner saw the first railroad train which was run in that state. The road extended from Madison to Columbus, a distance of forty miles. In 1843 Mr. and Mrs. Hamner came west, travelling by boat to Weston. They lived near Weston for six months and then moved to a farm in the bluffs near Rushville (then Columbus). Five years later they sold the farm and moved to St. Joe. While living on the farm near Rushville, Mrs. Hamner began to experience the hard times and hard work of pioneer life. Wool, taken from sheep of their own raising, was carded, spun into yarn, woven into cloth and then made up into clothing for winter wear. In summer flax was raised, rooted, broken, spun into yarn and woven into cloth for summer clothing. Mrs. Hamner did all of this work except shear the sheep and put in and harvest the flax crop. And while she was doing it she was raising a family of children. Mrs. Hamner was so dexterous a weaver that, in addition to her other housework, she often wove three yards of "four-leafed" jeans cloth in a day. In 1854 the family came across the river and pre-empted 160 acres lying west of town, and including Harmony Garden. The family lived there seven years. When Atchison was laid out as a town in 1854 and lots sold, Uncle Bill Martin bought the lot at 517 Atchison street, then the principal street in the town, and traded it to John Hamner for a yoke of oxen. Mr. Hamner hauled cottonwood lumber from across the river and built a house on the lot. The house is still in use, and, while the cottonwood warped so badly it had to be replaced and the roofs and floors wore out and new ones were supplied, it may still be called the original house John Hamner built in 1854. In 1856 the well, which made the property famous, was dug and continued in use until the blasting for the foundation for the basement for the new high school building, destroyed it. The house was first occupied by renters. The Hamner farm was finally lost in a land contest, extending over several years, and in 1861 the Hamners moved into the house where Mrs. Hamner died. The next year John Hamner died, leaving the widow with nothing but energy and will power to keep the family on. The war broke out and Mrs. Hamner supported her family by doing a man's work. She had a team and would work in the fields during the day and do her housework, sewing, etc., after night. She kept both end meeting so successfully that she did not have time to realize that she was having very hard times. When the war was over and the men came home, Mrs. Hamner began taking in boarders. Her first boarder, Daniel Stiffey, remained with her for thirty-two years, or until his death. Mrs. Hamner had the pleasure of seeing all her children grow to manhood and womanhood. And none of her early-day and later-day experiences robbed Mrs. Hamner of her sweet disposition. She fought and won, and took pride in thinking and talking over her experiences. Her daughter, Mrs. Sam Walters, remained in the family home for years and was constant and devoted in her care of her mother. The other children who survive are J.B. Hamner, of Muscotah; Mrs. John Peebler, of Meriden; William and Abe Hamner, of San Francisco, and Mrs. Sallie Whities, of Lamar, Col. Funeral services will be held at the home at 3 o'clock to-morrow afternoon, the Rev. Moore, of the Methodist church, South, officiating. The pall-bearers will be her grandsons. HAMNER One of the Oldest Citizens of Atchison -- She was 88 Years of Age Mrs. Matilda Hamner, one of the oldest citizens of Atchison, died this morning at 8:30 from the effects of a fall that she received a week ago. The deceased was 88 years old last Friday and came to Atchison with her husband in 1855, coming from Indiana. When they came there was not a house under shingles in the town, what settlement there was being one of tents. Grandma Hamner, as the deceased was better known, has lived in the hosue in which she died at 517 Atchison street, for over fifty years, and when it was built it was considered out in the country, as most of the houses were near the river bank. Six children are left as follows: J.B. Hamner, of Atchison; Mrs. Sally Whitis of Denver, Colo.; Mrs. Julia Peebler of Meriden, Kas.; W.P. Hamner of San Francisco; Mrs. Nannie Walters of Atchison, and Abe Hamner of San Francisco. Mrs. Walters, who has lived with her mother in Atchison for a number of years and has been most devated [sic] to her, especially during the last three years of her life, when she became so feeble that she required constant care. The funeral will take place at 3 o'clock p.m. tomorrow afternoon from the residence, 517 Atchison street, Rev. Moore of the South Methodist church officating. The Internment will be in Mount Vernon cemetery. Atchison Daily Champion 7 Jul 1910 p1 There are a large number of relatives in town to attend the funeral of the late Mrs. Matilda Hamner which occurred this afternoon from the residence on Atchison street. Among the relatives were twenty-seven grand children and thirty great-grand-children. The relatives came from Pardee, Muscotah and Cummings. The grandsons were the pall bearers. Rev. Roy Moore officated at the funeral, and there were many beautiful floral offerings. Internment was in Mount Vernon.
