Description	:	Mavis Murphy, of Nora Springs, Iowa, formerly of Riceville, died Monday, January 24, 2011 at her home in Nora Springs. She was 81 years of age. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 Saturday, January 29, 2011 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with burial in Calvary Cemetery, both in Riceville. Mavis Marie Murphy was born on May 5, 1929 at Orchard, Iowa, the daughter of Anthony and Beulah (Roethler) Prochaska. She received her education in the Osage School System. Following her education, she helped out at home until she met and later married Eugene James Murphy on January 4, 1950 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage, Iowa. Following their marriage, they moved to the parents farm and in 1956 moved to the farm southeast of Riceville. Mavis became a farm wife and helped with the chores. She raised chickens and had a huge garden, where she grew all the vegetables, but also had strawberries, raspberries and grapes. These were needed to raise her family. They became the parents of five children. Mavis also enjoyed doing embroidery, which she called "fancy work". She loved to decorate for the holidays and was an excellent cook in her day. She enjoyed traveling, liked to gamble, and was and avid reader, who would read almost a full book a day. She was good hearted and loved visiting and having coffee with the neighbor. Mavis was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, and its Altar and Rosary Society. She is survived by three daughters: Linda (Richard) Ott of Nora Springs, Iowa, Ann (Dean) Ott of Marble Rock, Iowa and Lorie Murphy of Nora Springs, Iowa; five grandchildren: Richard (Julie) Ott Jr, Keith (Jennifer) Ott, Sheila Ott, Melissa (Trent) Maurer and John (Amy Weber) Ott; eight great grandchildren: Morgan and Colton Too; Clarissa, Jayden and Dilan Ott; Kalista, Riesse and Connor Maurer; and Gabby Weber. Also surviving is one sister: Lois Salz of Casper, WY; two brothers: Anthony (Anita) Prochaska of Herrin, IL and Jerome (Marjorie) Prochaska of Orleans, VA. Mavis was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Eugene in 1996, one son, Eugene, Jr and one daughter, Alice Murphy.
