| Description | : | Melissa was the fifth of seven children born to Harmon and Barbara Smith. She married Thomas Griffith, a Civil War veteran, on October 14, 1860 in Huntington County, Indiana. They had two children, William and Viola. On November 25, 1873, Melissa married Robert E. Parsons in Jefferson County, Iowa. Together they had two sets of twins: Harmon and Harry, Josie and Jesse. Sadly, Harmon (named after Melissa's father) died in infancy and Josie died at nineteen, apparently after long suffering from epilepsy.
