PARSONS which occurred at the family home near Beckwith, Saturday morning, at 9:30 o'clock. Mr. PARSONS was 79 years, 1 month and 20 days old at the time of his death. He was in the best of health apparantly (sic) on the day that death called him, having done his chores and eaten a hearty breakfast, and it was while he was sitting in his chair that the death angel came and bore his spirit homeward without a moment's warning. Robert E. PARSONS was born in Tucker county, West Va., Dec. 16, 1830 (sic - 1835, from age at death), and came to Iowa with his parents in 1837. He was the fifth child of a family of thirteen children. He was united in marriage at Fairfield, March 29, 1855, to Katherine McCORMICK and to this union five children were born, two of whom survive, Nancy HELMAN of Los Angeles, Calif., and Eugene of this county. The wife preceeded (sic) him in death in 1870, and in 1874 (sic - Nov. 25, 1873) he was united in marriage to Mrs. Melissa GRIFFITH. To this union two pairs of twins were born, one son dying in infancy, and Josie who died June 26, 1896 (sic - 1895). Two sons, Jesse and Harry survive, the latter residing in Fairfield, and Jesse's address being unknown. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Ben ARCHIBALD of Oklahoma, and one brother James of the western states. Mr. PARSONS was a staunch supporter of the Democratic party. In many ways he was connected with the early history of Jefferson county. Ever willing to assist in the advancement of anything calculated to benefit the community. His aid was frequently solicited and response was always cheerfully made. His honesty and integrity commanded respect and confidence and won him hosts of friends. The funeral was largely attended, being conducted by Rev. T. S. Pool, a former pastor of the Bethesda church and favorite pastor of the deceased, and the remains were laid to rest in the cemetery. His six nephews were pall bearers. As far as human sympathy goes the relatives have it in abundance. ------------- Robert was just four months old when his parents, John Rush/Rust Parsons and Diana Parsons first came to the territory that was to become Jefferson County, Iowa. That was in early spring of 1836. These were among the very first pioneer settlers of Jefferson County. Because the area wasn't suited yet for this young family they moved to Illinois for a time, returning to this area in 1838. Robert married Katherine McCormick on March 29, 1855 in Fairfield, Iowa. At least five children were born to this union: Two children survived their father as of 1915: Nancy (Helman, of Los Angeles, CA.) and Eugene Asberry Parsons. Note: a cemetery canvas done some years ago indicated that there were six "Parsons" infants/children buried in this plot. Their collective dates ranged from the 1860's into the 1870's. It isn't clear if they are inclusive of the known children or were infants not otherwise accounted for in obituaries. Katherine died in 1870 and Robert went on to marry Mrs. Melissa Griffith on Nov. 25, 1873 (license #4122; date sometimes rounded to 1874). According to her probate statement of heirs of 1880, she was the mother of Wm. Orlando Griffith (age 19) and Joanna V Griffith (age 16). It isn't clear if she was widowed or divorced at the time she married Robert. The 1880 census conducted in June doesn't list Wm. Orlando as being in the Parsons household; it does however lists Viola J Griffith. Two sets of twins were born to Robert and Melissa Parsons: Harmon R and Harry Rust on January 11, 1875, and Josie and Jesse in 1877. Harmon and Josie both died and they share inscription space with their mother on the Parsons family monument in the burial plot at Bethesda Cemetery. ------ Note: marriage records of Jefferson County also find that Robert E Parsons married a Jane Rodgers (Jane "Polly" Dill), age 49, originally of Hancock County, Ill., on November 3, 1886 by the Rev. H.M. Lentz. However, notes indicate that they were divorced just two months later, in January 1887.
