Melvin Dwight was a senior in Miltonvale High School Funeral arrangements are pending as the Republican goes to press. ---------------------- Obituary Melvin Dwight Pilcher Melvin Dwight Pilcher, son of Gaylord M. and Frieda M. Duvall Pilcher, was born on August 2, 1930 at the farm home near Concordia, Cloud County, Kansas, and departed this life December 9, 1947 at the age of 17 years, 4 months and 7 days. He spent the early years of his life with his parents near the place of his birth. When he was four, his mother passed away, leaving him to be cared for by his father and uncle. After his father's marriage to Mildred Bellows, he and his brother and sisters accompanied them to Peach Orchard, Ark., where he lived until he was 13 years of age. From Arkansas they moved to St. Louis, Mo., where Melvin Dwight completed his grade school career. During the first or second month of his freshman year, he came with his family to Miltonvale where he again took up his high school work. Melvin Dwight enjoyed his school life a great deal. He was a very active member in all the high school organizations and was especially active in athletics. During his freshman year he earned his first track letter. As a sophomore he made another letter for track and his first football letter. He was also vice president of his sophomore class. When a Junior, he lettered in three sports, football, basketball and track. During this year he was vice president of the Hi-Y and has been a member of this organization all during high school. This year he earned his third football letter, was president of the Student Council and was acting captain of the first basketball game of the season. Melvin Dwight had many friends in all walks of life and was always known for his cheerfulness, helpfulness and good humor. His mother preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn his father, step-mother and brother, Norman, of the home; two sisters, Lorena Coffell of Miltonvale, and Pauline Lynch of Delphos; a brother, Norris, of Concordia; a half-brother and half-sister, Arnold and Gayle, also of the home. He is also survived by his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Duvall, of Concordia, two nephews, two nieces and a host of relatives and friends.
