He was only twenty-seven years of age and in the pink of condition and good health. The news of his passing came as a great shock to his host of friends and acquaintances, and dealt a stunning blow to relatives. He lived in Hastings. A checker for the Hastings WPA road graveling crew, Mervil had left for work as usual that morning, busy with the job of gravelling the road extending from the E. Boom farm and east to No. 1. He and his fellow workmen were at work on the road about midway between Hastings and Litchville. A loaded gravel truck drove up, headed toward the west, and Mervil stepped onto the road from inside a little shelter, for the purpose of checking the load. While there were other men beside Mervil and the truck driver there at the time, none of them happened to witness the accident which cost the young man his life. Apparently, though, he somehow was pulled beneath the truck and a portion of his body crushed by the dual wheels. No one, excepting perhaps the driver of the truck, realized that anything had gone wrong until Mervil was seen lying helplessly on the ground. He was carried into the then emptied truck, taken to Hastings as fast as possible, and thence rushed to Valley City by car in the utmost haste, but he died just a few minutes before reaching the hospital. Picked up in an unconscious condition, he regained consciousness shortly before getting to Valley City. Funeral services were held in the Hastings church on Tuesday afternoon of this week, with the Rev. Haakonson in charge. Fred Songberg, Reynold Peterson, Leroy Peterson, Arthur Kulsrud, Algeo Norberg and Hubert Stoneberg served as the pall bearers and the remains were laid at rest in the Peterson family plot in the Spring Creek cemetery. A crowd that taxed the capacity of the church, both main auditorium and basement, attended the services, and the rites were made audible to the people in the basement through a loud speaker system. During the course of the rites, special musical numbers were rendered by a trio composed of Miss Davidson, Miss Headland and Mr. Velzy, with Miss Welhaf as their accompanist, and by Mrs. O. R. Mahlum, for whom Miss Norgard served as accompanist. The trio sang two numbers: “Who Shall Our Pilot Be” and “I Need Thee Every Hour.” Mrs. Mahlum sang “Saved by Grace” as a solo. “Who Shall Our Pilot Be” was Mervil’s favorite hymn ever since he and his brother, Herbert, sang it in church as a duet some years ago. A son of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Peterson, Mervil Edmund Peterson was born on January 14, 1913, having celebrated his 27th birthday just six days before the tragic accident took place. Most of his education was obtained in the schools of the community. he remained on the family farm as a right hand bower until well after he had attained his majority, always a willing, able and thoughtful workman. Among his several cultural accomplishments was his ability to play the cornet well, both in band and orchestra associations. On October 3, 1936, he was married to Miss Jennie Larson, of Hastings. Two daughters, Janice Marie and Irene Elizabeth were born to this union, who with their mother, are left to face life without the aid and guidance of a loving daddy. Other relatives left to mourn his untimely passing are his parents, three brothers, Herbert, Kenneth and Orley, all at home, and two sisters, Hazel (Mrs. Clarence Willason) and Myrna (Mrs. Edvick Nelson) of the Kathryn area. If Mervil Peterson had an enemy anywhere in the world, no one ever heard of it. He was loved and held in high regard by all, not only because of his clean, manly ways, but for the manner in which he faced life and its burdensome problems. Mervil Peterson was an all-round good man. What more is there to say other than that his sorrowing people have the sympathy of the whole community.
