E. L. Stone, M. E. pastor at Knoxville. A brief service, conducted by Rev. G. W. Talbott, was also held at Bethel church in Cedar township, and burial took place in the Bethel cemetery. Mildred Mae Deming, daughter of S. S. and Cynthia A. Deming, was born in Rhodes, Marshall county, Iowa, December 20, 1905. In 1918 she moved to Lucas county with her parents and this vicinity has since been her home with the exception of the school years. She attended the Russell high school and graduated from West high school in Des Moines in 1923. She also attended Drake University, making her home with her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Deming. She was forced to discontinue her studies at Drake University in 1928 on account of ill health, which was the beginning of the illness which ultimately caused her death. In spite of her ill health, Mildred kept on with her teaching and taught nine successful years in the schools of Lucas county and in the schools at Tracy, Iowa and Williamson, Iowa. She is survived by her mother, Mrs. Cynthia Deming of Cedar township; her sisters, Mrs. Verl Rouse and Bertha of Chariton and Sara and Vera at home; and her brothers, Wyatt, of Morristown, Minnesota, Sterling of Waseca, Minnesota, and John, Merle and Willard at home; and her friend, Loyd Mikesell. Her father and one brother, Harry, preceded her in death. Mildred was a loving daughter and sister and her happiest hours were spent in doing for others. In this community, where her life was spent, she was loved and esteemed by all who knew her.
