Marin Independent Journal, 26 Feb 1995: MIRIAM "BROWNIE" BRADLEY GRBAC Miriam Bradley Grbac, who was known by her friends as Brownie, was born in a small house on the railroad property in Tiburon on October 22, 1899. In 1901 she and her family moved into the house her parents built at 131 Esperanza. Miriam was one of eight children. She started her education at Tiburon School, where there were two classrooms and two teachers for all eight grades. There were about 40 students. She went on to attend Tamalpais High School. It took her about an hour to get there because she had to take a ferry boat to Sausalito, and then transfer to an electric train which went on to Mill Valley and points north. After graduation from High School, she went on to San Francisco State Teachers College where she earned her teachers credential about 1920. Her first teaching job was at the old Reed School located near where Jefferson Drive in Belveron Gardens is located today. There were eight or nine students, and she taught all eight grades. Reed School was a one room school house with an old pot bellied stove sitting in the middle for heat. She taught there for one year after which the school was closed due to a lack of students. The remaining few students were sent to Belvedere School, and she went on to teach in another one room school in Ignacio. She taught there about a year, and then returned to Tiburon to teach at the Tiburon School which was located where the Bradley house is today. Bradley House was named in honor of her parents. She continued teaching school until 1940, as well as taking care of her aging parents until they passed on. In 1940, she married Mate Grbac, and started a family. She had three children, John, a member of the Tiburon Fire Department, Miriam Chambers of Boardman Ohio, and Marie Prichard of Forestville, Ca. She had six grand children, and two great grand children. Her husband passed on in 1966. She was quite active with the St. Hilary's church, and the Y.L.I. in Sausalito. She was active in various charity affairs as well as working for the village salvage shop. She enjoyed gardening and spent many hours in her garden. A combination Funeral mass and rosary will be held at Nazareth House at 245 Nova Albion in San Rafael on February ?, 1995 at ? AM The family suggest memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society.
