Sunday morning at six o'clock Mr. Morgan Flower was discovered dead, having passed away in his sleep at his home in this city. Mr. Flower's health had been poorly for some time and since last Wednesday he had been worse than usual, but not considered to a dangerous condition. He had spoken to his wife at two o'clock that morning and as half past two when his son, Orlando Flower, was there, he was sleeping quietly. He must have died very soon afterwards. Mr. Flowers (sic) was born in Trumbull county, Ohio, on the twenty-fourth of May, 1810, and grew to manhood there. He came to Iowa in 1845 and lived for a few years in Wapello county, but since 1850, when he located on a farm in Cedar township, he has lived in Jefferson county. He was married to Nancy Dennis August 13, 1851 (sic), and of the children born to them, Orlando Flower, of this city, is the only one now living. They moved to Fairfield eleven years ago and have since resided on South Main street. The funeral took place from his son's residence Tuesday morning at ten o'clock, just twenty-four hours after the funeral of Mrs. Keller, Mrs. Flower's mother. Rev. Dr. J. F. Magill conducted the services. ----------- Fairfield Ledger Feburary 15, 1899 Pg. 3 Col. 5 Two Deaths in One Family. It would seem that more than an ordinary burden of sorrow had come to Mr. and Mrs. Orlando Flower of this city this week. Saturday afternoon about 1:45 Mrs. Magdalene Keller (sic), mother of Mrs. Flower, died at their home after a brief illness. Sunday morning between hours of 2 and 6 o'clock Morgan Flower, father of Mr. Flower, living in an adjoining house, passed away very suddenly and unexpectedly. That day the bodies of the aged father and mother lay side by side in the Flower home. The sympathy of the community is with the stricken household in its double affliction, and it has been attested to in many ways. Funeral services over the remains of Mrs. Keller were held at St. Mary's Catholic church, this city, Monday moring at 10 o'clock, Rev. A. M. Nodler officiating, and the remains were interred in the Pattison cemetery in Cedar township. The funeral of Mr. Flower occurred yesterday morning at the same hour, Rev. J. F. Magill having charge of the services, and the body was buried in the Evergreen cemetery. Magdalene Keller (sic) was a native of France, and was born in 1815. She grew to womanhood and was married there to Gustavus Keller (sic), who died in this county November 12, 1880. The family came to this county in 1845, among the earliest of the Frence immigrants who at one time formed so considerable a part of the population of Cedar township. Mrs. Keller was the mother of ten children, eight of whom are now living, Edward, Tony, Eugene, Gustavus and August Keller, Mrs. Charles Easton and Mrs. O. Flower in this county, and Frank Keller at Unionville, Mo. She was a woman of more than ordinary intelligence, industrious and thrifty, and aided her husband very materially in laying the foundation for a comfortable little fortune in their new home. Mrs. Keller was best known, perhaps, in the community in Cedar township where the earlier years of her life were spent, and she was held in high esteem there as an excellent woman, a kind neighbor and friend. Morgan Flower was born in Turmbull county, O., May 24th, 1810, where he grew to manhood. He came to Iowa in 1845, residing for a few years in Wapello county, but in 1850 located on the farm in Cedar township which yet bears his name. August 13th, 1851, he was married to Nancy Dennis, who survives him. One child is now living as the result of this marriage, Orlando Flower of this city. Mr. Flower was a practical and successful farmer, and retained his interest in agricultural affairs down to the day of his death. Nothwithstanding his advanced age he continued active work until only a short time before his death. He was a man of many excellences, honest and conscientious in his dealing with his fellows, a useful and creditable citizen. There are many people among the older residents of Jefferson county who will sorrow with the family in his death.
