Mr. Briggs had a large acquaintanceship with G. A. R. men of this city and vicinity, all of whom will regret to hear of his demise. The following sketch was forwarded to The Republican's military editor from Stephen Tripp of Hayt, Kansas: Emory Briggs the subject of this sketch, died at the home of his sister, Mrs. J. B. Titus, in Santa Paula, Cal., August 13, 1908, death resulting from cancer of the stomach. The deceased was born at the home of his parents, Jeremy and Rosilinda Stanton Briggs, 67 years ago, on N. Keyser avenue, at that time none of the people lived along the Back Road, as it was called in those days, dreamed that it would rise to the dignity of a city avenue. Emory was educated in the old Back Road school house, (where by the way some high grade teachers for those days held forth) and at the Wyoming Seminary, and while in that institution enlisted in Co. F, Eighth Pennsylvania infantry, in April 1861, under President Lincoln's first call for valunteers (sic). After his discharge from the Eighth he reenlisted in Co. K of the Eleventh Pennsylvania Cavalry on the 26th of August, 1861, and served in that organization until it was mustered out of the service, August 13, 1865, at that time he was quarter-master sergeant of the company. As a soldier, Comrade Briggs never shirked his duty no matter how dangerous or disagreeable. In 1867 he went west and located at West Point, Neb., then a frontier post office, now a thriving town of 2,000 people. In 1898 he went to California where he resided until his death. In 1870 he married Miss Mary Beemer, a cousin of Supt. Beemer, of the Hillside Home. Twelve children were born to them, six boys and six girls who with his wife survive. The following extract from the obituary notice of the deceased is copied from the West Point Republican of August 21st, and shows the tsteem (sic) in which he was held by the people among whom he lived for over thirty years: The deceased was a man of many admirable qualities, just and generous, upright and manly, honest and industrious, a good neighbor a kind friend a loving husband and an indulgent father. He filled a large place, and the measure of his usefulness was great. He acceptably filled many positions of public trust in his city and county, county commissioner, postmaster, justice of peace, police judge, county judge and city clerk. The deceased was a member of the Christian church, a member of the G. A. R., and of the Masonic Fraternity. In conclusion no higher tribute can be paid to the memory of Emory Briggs than the world is better for his having lived in it. Stephen Tripp Hoyt, Kansas, Sept. 21, 1908
