"Mertie" Birch Funeral Saturday Myrtel Emma Birch, the daughter of Phillip and Reta Tilton Studt, was born Nov. 13, 1894, on a farm north of Glasco, Kans. She died Oct. 18, 1989, at the Nicol Home in Glasco at the age of 94. Mertie, as she was better known, grew up on the farm and attended the Welcome Country School. After completing her education, she worked as a telephone operator on the Glasco Exchange for several years. On Dec. 1, 1921, Mertie was united in marriage with Orville B. Birch at Beloit, and one son, Merville and one daughter, Carol, were born to this union. Orville Birch died Aug. 10, 1962. Mertie was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Glasco and the V.F.W. Auxiliary. Sewing was one of her favorite pastimes, and she made all her own clothes. As a young girl, she loved to draw, and later developed her talent for painting pictures. Her trademark was to have a bird in flight in all her paintings. Survivors include her daughter, Carol Gehrke and her husband, Duane, Glasco; a son, Merville Birch and his wife, Leona, Wale Village, Tex.; two sisters and their husbands, Elsie and Ed Horn and Ruby and Raymond Brown, Glasco; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Ray and Clarence Studt; and one sister, Elma Berndt. Funeral services were at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, 1989, at the Dean Funeral Home in Glasco, with Pastor Greg Uthus of Concordia officiating. Burial was in the Glasco Cemetery. Organ music was provided by Phyllis Struble. Casket bearers were Leo Adkins, Eldon Henderson, Jim Henning, Lewis Lavy, Tom Lynch and Kent Studt.
