BOOKER, one of the best residents of Fairfield, died at 5 o'clock Sunday morning, after an extended illness. She was the widow of the late S.F. BOOKER, who died in October 1899. One daughter survives them. She is Mrs. Clara HOWLETT, assistant librarian at the Jefferson county library. Mrs. BOOKER was of a lovable disposition and had an especially large circle of friends in the city. She was a devout member of the Presbyterian church. The funeral was held this afternoon from her late residence on South Main street at 2 o'clock this afternoon. Rev. W.F. Jones of the Presbyterian church conducted the service and said in substance: Narcissa A. WILKINS was born at St. Clairsville, O., on the 12th day of December, 1829. On the 16th day of December, 1906, four days after she had celebrated her seventy-seventh birthday, she pased out of this earthly life into the heavenly. She was married to S.F. BOOKER at St. Clairsville on May 48 (sic.), 1848. To them were born six children, two of whom died in infancy. Mrs. Anna P. SANDS and Harry F. died before the mother and the other two, Chas. H. and Mrs. Clara HOWLETT, survive to mourn the loss of a tender and devoted mother. Mr. and Mrs. BOOKER came to Iowa and settled in Fairfield in 1864. In 1876 they removed to Missouri where they spent fourteen years. They returned to Fairfield in 1890. Mr. and Mrs. BOOKER joined the Presbyterian church of Fairfield on January 10, 1865. To the day of her death, Mrs. BOOKER was a devout christian, living out in her life the faith she professed. She loved her church and greatly prized its privileges. Until her last sickness she was never absent from the services of the Lord's house: It is a rarely beautiful and thoroughly loveable life which has passed from our midst. Mrs. BOOKER has peculiarly endeared herself to a wide circle of friends. To know her was to esteem and love her. Words of eulogy would be impertinent because not needed, since her memory is enshrined, while life shall last, in the hears (sic. hearts?) of her friends. The qualities of serenity, winsomeness and dependableness, and above all her sweet and real Christian faith, won and held friends for her in a peculilarly close tie. Yet it is in her own home that she will be missed most greatly. The daughter who has never before been separated from her mother, and the son who especially needed the mother's care, are severely bereft in the mother's taking off." ~~~~ "Jefferson County Republican" December 24, 1906 Page 1, Column 3 Obituary. Narcissa A. WILKINS was born at St. Clairsville, Ohio, December 12, 1829; in May 1848 she was married to S. F. BOOKER. Six children were born to them, two dying in infancy and two; Mrs. Anna P. SANDS and Harry F. BOOKER, within the past few years. One son, Chas. H. and a daughter, Mrs. Clara HOWLETT, survive her, and were with her to minister to her wants. Mr. and Mrs. BOOKER came to Ia. in the early sixties and settled in Fairfield but remained here only a short time until they removed to Missouri where they lived for some fifteen years, when they again came to Fairfield, which has been their home ever since, and where Mrs. BOOKER peacefully passed away, on Sabbath morning, December 16, 1906, aged 77 years and 4 days. Mr. BOOKER died in 1899. Deceased was a life long member of the Presbyterian church and when health permitted was always in her pew during church services. Funeral services were held at the family residence Monday afternoon conducted by her pastor, Rev. W. F. It was originally in reference to her husband, Samuel Frank Booker and so should be considered in that context: Portrait and Biographical Album of Jefferson and Van Buren Counties, Iowa, Printed 1890 by Lake City Publishing Co., Chicago, Pages 608-609 .....On the 18th of May, 1848, Mr. BOOKER was united in marriage with Miss Narcissa A., daughter of William and Harriet (MAGILL) WILKINS. Her birth occurred at St. Clairsville, Ohio, December 12, 1829, where her father ran a saddler's shop for some years. He was a native of South Carolina but was reared in Pennsylvania and when a young man removed to Ohio, where he was married. His wife was a native of Winchester, Va. Both died at St. Clairsville, respected by all who knew them. They were members of the Methodist Church and consistent Christian people. Mr. WILKINS served as associated judge of the court of common pleas. -------- Note: On February 14, 1870 in Missouri, a set of triplet girls were born to Samuel Frank Booker and Narcissa A Wilkins Booker - Clara, Bella, and an otherwise unnamed little girl that likely died soon after birth. Clara was the only one that grew into adulthood. Bella is buried at Old Fairfield Cemetery in Fairfield, Iowa with her paternal grandmother Patience Berry Booker. The unnamed third girl was presumably buried in Missouri, but no other information about her is known to this contributor at this time.
