RIVERS GENEALOGY - Donald Robert Woods: ********************************** Nelson was part owner of the King Edward Hotel in Teeswater. He had a livery stable behind the hotel. He had a horse drawn 'bus' which met the train twice a day, taking people and mail to and from the station. TEESWATER OBITUARY - 12 June 1918: ****************************** The residents of the village were stunned this Wednesday evening when it became known that a very bad accident had happened at the station about half past five, when Mr. Nelson Rivers was fatally hurt. He was busy unloading sand for foundry castings from a car when the freight came in. The trainman shouted to him that he would have to move forward to let the train pass. He climbed onto the load, took the lines to do so, but the horses backed a little and the train struck the load, throwing Mr. Rivers forward under the feet of the horses. The powerful team he was driving became frightened and he was badly trampled with their feet. Although everything possible was done for him, medical aid was of no avail. He was conscious until the end which came about after two hours of suffering. Mr. Rivers was a home man, being entirely devoted to his wife and family, to whom the shock of his sudden death is a terrible blow. The sympathy of the community is with the grief stricken family in their loss. Interment in the Teeswater Cemetery.
