He died on Sepctber 9, 1990, at the Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa, having attained the age of 64 years, nine months, and four days. Nick was baptized at St Mary's Catholic Church in Panama, and received his first communion and was confirmed at St Mary's Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa. He attended St Mary's High School in Portsmouth, graduating in 1943. On July 23, 1945, he was united in marriage to Jean Schomer at St Mary's Catholic Church in Panama. Four children were born to this union. After their marriage, Mr & Mrs Schechinger lived in Omaha, Nebraska, for a short time before moving back to Portsmouth whre Nick started the Red and White grocery store and Rocket bar, which he and his wife operated for several years in Portsmouth. Later Nick became a partner in the ownership of the Chicken Hut and Evergreen Inn restaurant, both in Harlan. Nick and Jean were privileged to have celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary in July of this year. In additon to being a member of St Mary's Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Nick was a member of the Portsmouth Volunteer Fire Department, and the Earling Council No 1741 Knights of Columbus. Preceding him in death in addition to his parents were two brothers, Urban and Damien; and three sisters, Marita, Carmelita, and Gemma. Surviving him is his wife, Jean of Portsmouth; three daughters, Julie (Mrs Dick) Bulkely of Red Oak, Iowa; Jolene (Mrs Lee) Graeve of Issaquah, Washington; and Jill (Mrs Gregg) Yeutter of Omaha, Nebraska; one son, Jack and his wife Margie of Brookfield, Wisconsin; seven grandchildren; one sister, Kay (Mrs Ed) Rosenthal of Salem, Oregon; one brother, Willard and his wife Lillian; a sister-in-law, Marcella Schechinger, all of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and a brother-in-law, Harry Sonderman of Portsmouth; nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
