THROWN FROM THEIR VEHICLE Disastrous Ending of Pleasure Trip to Villisca Causes Mourning in Our Sister City on the West Misses Myrtle and Lora Lacock, residing in the vicinity of Nodaway, were drowned near the Meyerhoff farm, between Nodaway and Villisca, at 1:30 o'clock Tuesday of this week, in company with a party of three buggy loads these young people were attempting to cross the river at the time of the accident. Two buggies had crossed successfully, but tke third load, containing the two young ladies who were drowned and their brother John, a young man, missed tie end of the small bridge that was submerged is the water, and the vehicle was over turned. In all the party, there was not a person who could swim, and the accident was so sudden and shocking the girls were drowned before the party could do anything to prevent thecatastrophe. The bodies were recovered last evening and the funeral services will be held at the M.E. church in Nodaway this afternoon at 2 p.m and will be conducted by Rev. Frank Throw and Rev. C. A. Carlson. Interment will be made in the Methodist cemetery. It appears from the best information that we can get at the present time that the party, consisting of Misses Myrtle, Lena, Mamie, Tom and John Lacock, together with Miss Moore and two young men named Bowman, had set out on a fishing and pleasure trip, which thev had anticipation for some time. On arriving at a certain place they encountered a gentleman who informed them that the water was rising >very rapidly in the river and advised them not to cross. They waited for a period and decided to return home. In the meantime the water had risen in the river to the extent that the road and bridge were, under water. Two of the teams, containing the other members of the party, made the crossing successfully, but the third team containing the ones mentioned above, missed one end of ths bridge, with the results given. The brother John, was rescued in an exhausted condition and tha horse was drowned. The affair is sad one indeed, and the entire community sorrows with the bereaved ones in their affliction Adams County Free Press, August 19, 1908 Quite a number from here attended the funerals of the Lacock girls last Wednesday.
