Description	:	Norbert Jacob Schieffer, the fourth of ten children born to Frank and Katherine (Guenther) Schieffer, was born April 18, 1917. His father, Frank, son of Jacob and Margaret (Perk) Schieffer of Crofton, was a lifelong farmer and carpenter. His mother, Katherine, was the daughter of Conrad and Kathryn (Luening) Guenther of Crofton. Read More	Norbert Jacob Schieffer, the fourth of ten children born to Frank and Katherine (Guenther) Schieffer, was born April 18, 1917. His father, Frank, son of Jacob and Margaret (Perk) Schieffer of Crofton, was a lifelong farmer and carpenter. His mother, Katherine, was the daughter of Conrad and Kathryn (Luening) Guenther of Crofton. Norbert was raised on a farm located three miles north of Constance, NE, (presently the Vernon Schietter residence). He attended St. Joseph's Catholic School at Constance through the eighth grade. He lived and worked on his family farm while doing hired farm work. Letters to his family in 1938 speak of long, hard days picking corn for $.50 a day. While attending a bowery dance at the Menominee Church Picnic, he met his future bride. He married Mary Mueller November 14, 1939, at St. Boniface Catholic Church at Menominee, NE. Mary Elizabeth Mueller, the second of three children born to Joseph and Edith (Merkel) Mueller, was born June 30, 1911. Her father, Joseph, son of John and Elizabeth (Loecker) Mueller of Menominee, NE, was a local farmer and fruit grower. Her mother, Edith, was the daughter of Mike and Mary (Hoebelheinrich) Merkel of Crofton. Mary was born and raised on their farm located five miles north, one mile east, and one mile north of Crofton near Beaver Creek, NE, (presently the residence of her son, Madan Schieffer). Mary attended Beaver Creek School, Grades 1-9. As a young girl her father surprised the family one day by buying a second-hand player-piano. With his encouragement, she began piano lessons and became an excellent pianist. School days found Mary loving to read, performing hoop-drill dances, playing "Bear, and hitting the baseball over the centertield toilet. As a young lady, she was an active member of St. Mary's Circle and the Dramatic Club at Beaver Creek. Norbert and Mary's married life began with a small wedding reception on the Mueller farm, the day being an unusually warm 70 degrees. Their first three days of marriage were spent with her parents, followed by a move to their first home, a farm owned by Conrad Guenther one mile north and one mile east of Crofton. From 1941 to 1946 they lived on a farm owned by Bill Schaefer, seven miles north and one mile east of Crofton. Finally they moved and later purchased her parents' farm near Beaver Creek and remained there until their retirement in 1979. At that time they purchased a home in Crofton. It is the present home of Mary and her oldest son, Larry. They were members of St. Bondace Catholic Church in Menominee until their retirement, then joining the St. Rose Catholic Church in Crofton. Mary has been an active, lifelong member of Ladies Guild, Christian Mothers, and Catholic Daughters of America. Presently she is a member of the Frankfort Progressive Extension Club and the Crofton Women's Club. Memories most vivid for Mary are her only brother George's early death from osteomyelitis, picking fruit from her family's orchard and vineyard, dances in the Albert Tramp barn, and dancing to Lawrence Welk in Yankton, SD. Norbert remembered growing up in a large family, hard work, peanut brittle at Christmas, a good baseball game, and of course, "Sheephead!" However, traveling was their favorite pastime. Throughout their many years of travel by car (except Hawaii), they toured all 50 of the United States as well as Canada and Mexico. Many of these trips were taken with their close friends, Emil and Mary Janssen of Crofton. Baseball games were also high on their list, whether seeing a favorite major league team while traveling or watching their four sons play for the Crofton Blue Jays. Norbert and Mary farmed their entire life. Norbert died of a sudden heart attack February 8, 1984. He is buried at Immaculate Conception Cemetery at Beaver Greek. They had five children: Larry, Crofton; Val Dean, married to Nancy Bart, Crofton; Harley, married to Linda Kool, Inwood, IA; Marlan, married to Peggy Perk, Crofton; and Marcia, married to Marvin Oines, Jr., Watertown, SD.
