Description	:	Ola Babcock Miller was Iowa's first female Secretary of State. Initially elected in 1932, she was reelected twice. Miller died in 1937 at age 65 while serving her third term. Born in 1872 in Washington County, Miller attended Iowa Wesleyan College. Although she was active in the late 19th-century woman suffragemovement, Miller is best remembered as the founder of the Iowa State Patrol. Initially elected in 1932, she was reelected twice. Miller died in 1937 at age 65 while serving her third term. Born in 1872 in Washington County, Miller attended Iowa Wesleyan College. Although she was active in the late 19th-century woman suffragemovement, Miller is best remembered as the founder of the Iowa State Patrol. While Secretary of State, she convinced the state legislature that a statewide law enforcement agency was needed, particularly to enforce highway safety laws. The patrol was created in 1935 and placed under her control, where it grew from a force of 50 men to 150 patrol officers by 1938. Miller also served as state and national president of the P.E.O. In 2002, the state renamed the Capital's Historic Office building, ( Des Moines, IA) in her honor. In August 2006, the City of Washington and the Iowa State Patrol current and former patrol officers joined in replacing the cement base of the monument that marks her resting place. The event was attended by State Representative Sandra Greiner, former Iowa Secretary of State Elaine Baxter, Iowa Public Safety Commissioner, Kevin Techau, Colonel Robert O. Garrison, Chief of the Iowa State Patrol, former and current patrol officers and Washington Mayor, Rick Cicalo, who opened the ceremony by saying-"If Ola could say something to us at this moment- she might say-Why are they fussing on about me on such a hot day....the answer is quite simple ..we wish to say Thank you!" Speaking for the Iowa State Patrol, whose officers at the time of her failing health visited her at her bedside and as she affectionately referred to them, as "My Boys", Colonel Robert O. Garrison, Chief of the Iowa State Patrol, who contemplated how many lives were saved on Iowa Roadways by her god work, stated: "It is with a great deal of pride that the Iowa State Patrol participates in this memorial service. The contributions made by Ola Babcock Miller to the citizens of Iowa are immeasurable."
