Description	:	On the afternoon of 30 June 1900, Oliver McKinney and a friend, J. W. Benson of Eldon, Iowa, took a load of oats from Oliver's farm into the town of Hedrick. After delivering the oats, Oliver did some shopping for the family, buying sugar, bananas, and candy. Read More	On the afternoon of 30 June 1900, Oliver McKinney and a friend, J. W. Benson of Eldon, Iowa, took a load of oats from Oliver's farm into the town of Hedrick. After delivering the oats, Oliver did some shopping for the family, buying sugar, bananas, and candy. He also likely bought a bottle of spirits, which Oliver and Mr. Benson were drinking as they drove out of town towards Oliver's farm at roughly 6:45 p.m. As Oliver's wagon approached Lake Street in Hedrick, the two men were engaged in conversation and failed to notice the approach of the Burlington and Western Railroad engine which was close to the crossing. The engineer would later say he sounded the whistle, but witnesses debated whether they heard a whistle or not. In any case, Oliver's team broke into a trot a few feet before the crossing, and the train engine hit the wagon carrying Oliver and Mr. Benson. Although the team ran off, the force of the engine hitting the wagon crushed the wagon and killed Oliver and Mr. Benson. A subsequent inquiry would result in a ruling declaring the engineer innocent of negligence. Several witnesses said someone picked up the bottle of spirits and carried it off before the family arrived at the scene. He was married April 19, 1874 to Miss Emily Boldoser. To them were born six children, four of whom, with his wife, mother, sister, and four brothers survive him. The funeral was held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. L. Ingham at Union Chapel, the interment being at the Abel Cemetery. Mr. McKinney was a member of the I.O.O.F. and was laid to rest to the impressive ceremonies of the ritual of the order.
