Honorary casket bearers were Frank Sawyer, Millard Gee, Edward Hunt, and Vern Watts. Active bearers were Marlin Mercer, Donald Eastwood, Clyde Patton, Eugene King, Harold Hinz, and Robert Watts. The following life sketch was read: Opal Glen Bayes was born August 6, 1905, near Tabor, the son of Roy and Ethel Runyan Bayes. He received his education in the Tabor public schools. About 1920, his family moved to a farm south of Strahan, where he assisted his father until he and Vira Nims were married at the Strahan Methodist Episcopal Church, June 4, 1930. The couple set up housekeeping first at Emerson, where Opal drove for Standard Oil, then on a place just south of Emerson where they farmed until 1946. They operated a dairy for a year at Avoca, then in 1947, returned to Emerson where Opal took work with the State Highway Commission which he continued until his retirement in 1970. Never one to sit still, he kept busy with his hobbies, antiques, and auctions, leather harness work, hunting, fishing, high school sports. He and Vira traveled widely, and he continued to keep his hand in on the farm, assisting both his brother and his brother-in-law from time to time, doing work he loved to do right to the moment of his death. He is especially remembered as one who enjoyed good conversation, teasing, both give and take, and neighbors and small children for whom he always had time, for listening, for sharing, and love and concern. He was a member of Humanity Lodge, No. 378, A.F. & A.M. Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 121, and the Emerson United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Helen, his sister, Ruth, and an infant brother, Roy. He is survived by his wife, Vira, his son Darrell and daughter-in-law, Gloria, and two step-granddaughters, all of Omaha, Nebraska; his sisters, Mrs. Cleo (Mildred) Phillips, and Mrs. Ted (Virginia) Hicks of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Mrs. Victor (Faye) Norton of Red Oak; his brother John Bayes of Malvern, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.
