Hatcliff was born to Mark and Jennie (Christian) Hatcliff on May 9, 1901, on a farm near Shickley and passed away Monday, July 30, 1979, at Geneva, Fillmore county hospital, at the age of 78 years, 2 months and 21 days. Oscar was the fourth child of seven children. He attended Sunday school and church (Free Will Baptist) near the home where he was born and later on July 11, 1978, he accepted Christ as his personal Savior through the ministry at Sunset Home. The last year and a half of Oscar’s life was spent at the Sunset Nursing home near Geneva, where he was lovingly cared for. He leaves to cherish his memory, one brother, Arthur of Shickley; three sisters, Mrs. Hattie Spahn of Hastings, Mrs. Ed. (Florence) Isley of Geneva and Mrs. Jesse (Alice) Ackerman of Milford; and many nieces and nephews. Oscar was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Elsie, and one brother, Lester. Funeral services were conducted from the Farmer & Son funeral home in Geneva on Thursday, August 2, 1979, at 2 p.m., with Lee Schlegel officiating. The Salem Mennonite quartet sang “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere” and “We are going Down the Valley.” Pallbearers were Lyle Spahn, Melvin Spahn, David Schlegel, Leonard Kreachbaum, LaVern Ulmer and Jerry Ulmer.
