Read More	ENDS OWN LIFE BY HANGING MERLE ANDERSON COMITS SUICIDE AT ROOM IN FISHER HOTEL ILL HEALTH IS BELIEVED THE CAUSE WAS ETERAN OF WORLD WAR WENT TO FRANCE AS MEMBER OF COMPANY F AND WAS GASSED, WAS 34 YEARS OLD AT HIS DEATH Merle Anderson, 34 years old and a resident of this vicinity practically all his life, committed suicide Tuesday afternoon by hanging himself with a rode in a room on the second floor of the Fisher Hotel where he had been employed nearly three years. He was found about 11 o’clock that night by his wife and by her brother, Lon Lines of of Clarinda, when they went to the room to get some bed clothing. After first removing the lower part of a heat register in the ceiling of the room, Mr. Anderson went to the room directly above it on the third floor where he cut a small slit in the carpet which covered the register, dropped a small rope clothes line through, tied it to one corner of the register, and then closed the opening in the carpet. The clothes line was one which had been used at the hotel for drying clothes inside the building. Returning to the room on the second floor, Mr. Anderson stood on a chair and tied the rope around his neck, then kicked the chair from under himself. From examination of his body when found it was thought he had been dead about seven years. He left no note giving any reason why he took his life and though he had given no suspicion that he contemplated such act it is believed ill health was the cause. He was gassed while serving with Company F. in the World War and he never recovered by the effects of it. His condition became aggravated during the last several weeks. He ate his dinner as usual Tuesday noon with other members of his family at the Elms Hotel and was in a jovial mood at that time. He came up town during the afternoon and abut 3:30 o’clock dropped in at the Carl Taylor Cigar Store for a cup of coffee, as was his custom. He also got shaved while on the same trip, and it is presumed he went back to the hotel soon after that. Members of his family have been unable to find anybody who saw him alive later than that time. Coroner Walter Sellergren of Red Oak was notified of the death and came to Villisca soon after the body was found. After learning the circumstances he pronounced that an inquest us unnecessary. Oscar Merle Anderson was born in Page County, Iowa, January 6, 1894, and was married to Lucille Lines on June 20, 1925. To this union was born one daughter, Betty Gene, who with the wife survives. Mr. Anderson leaves also a his mother, Mrs. Esther Anderson of Villisca and four brothers and two sisters. They are Paul of Des Moines, Herbert of Twin Falls, Idaho, James of Nebraska City, Don Anderson and Mrs. Carl Taylor of Villisca, and Mrs. R. D. Stewart of Boone, Iowa. The body was taken to the Fessler & Sutphen Funeral Home where it was prepared for the funeral which was held Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Methodist Church with Re. E. S. Menoher of Corning in charge of the service. The pall bearers were army comrades of the deceased and the interment was in the Villisca Cemetery. Villisca Review, Friday, February 3, 1928, page 1 & 4
