Mr. Smith was born in Forsyth County on April 23, 1942, to Betty Boaz Smith and the late Oscar W. Smith, Sr.; he was the oldest grandson of the late Emmett and Esther Smith and Roscoe "R.C." and Ethel Fulk Boaz. He is survived by his soul-mate and wife of 28 years, Brenda Harvey Smith; his mother, Betty Boaz Smith of Pilot Mountain, NC; his son, Mark Smith and wife, Jennifer of Candler, NC; one step-daughter, Elisabeth Katz Morris and husband, Jonathan of Houston, TX; one step-son, Richard Katz, Jr. of Norfolk, VA; sisters, Sue Smith Colmant and Elizabeth (Liz) Smith Tilley and husband, Jerry, both of Pilot Mountain; a brother and sister-in-law, Richard Harvey of Virginia Beach and Barbara; one niece, Molly Tilley White of Charlotte and husband, H.R.; and one nephew, Joshua Smith Tilley of Chapel Hill, NC and wife, Karrie. Oscar leaves behind countless relatives and friends in North Carolina, Virginia and Texas and his beloved Yorkie, "Harry". Oscar attended Duke University, Brevard College, and graduated from American University in Washington, D.C. After one year of post graduate work at American University, Oscar began his career as Assistant Vice President & Branch Administrator at Northwestern Bank in Winston-Salem, NC. He went on to work for The Washington Group where he served as President & CEO, Convenient Systems, Inc. His retail career led him to Norfolk, VA where he owned and operated High's Ice Cream Corporation of the Tidewater Virginia area, followed by forming the Oscar Smith & Associates Consulting Firm. In 1992, Oscar moved to Dallas, Texas to work for the Greenbriar Corporation which is now New Concept Energy, Inc. Mr. Smith has served as Secretary of the company since December 2001 along with being Vice President of the Company since June 1994. Growing up, Mr. Smith was active in all programs of the First United Methodist Church in Pilot Mountain, spent his summers with his family at their home in Lake Junaluska, NC, working in various capacities for the Lake Junaluska Assembly, and was a member of the Methodist Youth Caravan attending the World Methodist Conference in Oslo, Norway the summer of 1960. Later in life, Mr. Smith served on the Board of Directors for Brevard College, The Williams School of Norfolk, VA, Norfolk State University and was active in many other organizations. Rotary was Oscar's true passion, and he will be remembered for his tireless efforts for both Norfolk Rotary Club where he served as President and Prestonwood Rotary Club in Dallas, TX. He was the recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow. All that had the opportunity to know Oscar will remember him as the consummate gentleman. Being always true to his word, a handshake meant more than anything. He was a faithful and loyal friend who will be remembered for his sharp wit and unconditional acceptance of others, making the world a better place. He had a love for reading, opera, movies, music, animals, and of course Starbucks.
