Pioneer Resident of Sarpy County Succumbs to Attack of Pneumonia. Otto H. Meyer, an old and respected resident of Sarpy county, died at his home in South Papillion Monday evening at 8 o'clock. Mr. Meyer was taken ill just two weeks previous to his death, having contracted a severe cold which turned to pneumonia. Dr. Armstrong was summoned at the outset and all possible care was given Mr. Meyer but in spite of the best medical skill, trained nursing, and the ministrations of kind and loving hands of wife and children, he succumbed Monday evening. He was thought to be growing stronger until Monday noon when a change for the worse took place and he gradually sank until death relieved his suffering. Otto H. Meyer was born in Germany in 1843 and came to America with his parents when he was eight years old, residing first at Davenport, Iowa, where they resided for two years, and coming from there to St. Marys, Iowa. There he worked with his parents who operated a grist mill, but tiring of the monotony of this life he sought the excitement of freighting across the plains to Denver and made several trips, braving the danger of attack from Indians. When he was fifteen years of age his father died, and being the oldest son, the cares of managing the home rested largely upon his shoulders. His mother survived her husband eight years, during which time she had bought a farm in Sarpy county, known as the Meyer homestead near Ft. Crook. Mr. Meyer resided on this place until about ten years ago leading an active life as farmer and bee fancier. In 1881 he was elected county commissioner for three years and again in 1884 he was re-elected and served three more years. He moved to Papillion ten years ago, building a splendid home in the south part of town where he resided at the time of his death. He took an active part in local politics and was serving as a member of the village board of trustees at the time of his death. In 1871 he was married to Miss Ella Kingman, and to this union two children were born, Paul and Bertha. Twenty-three years ago in April, his first wife died and in January 1889 he was married to Miss Martha Getchmann. Two children, Walter, aged twenty-one, and Martha, aged seventeen, were born to this union, who with his wife survive him. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Anna Albrecht, of Omaha, and by four brothers, Louis, Frank, Uneas and George. Mr. Meyer was a man of a disposition that commanded the respect of all. He was honest and upright in all his dealing and no one can be found who has ought but kind words for him. The funeral was held from the late home this afternoon at one o'clock, Rev. Joel Burke, of the English M. E. church officiating. Interment was made in Schaab's cemetery southeast of town. The remains were followed by a long concourse of sorrowing friends who in this manner showed their respect for one who had resided in their midst for many years and who had the esteem and confidence of all. The Times joins the many friends in extending sympathy to the members of the bereaved family who will miss the love and companionship of a kind and loving husband and a tender father.
