The Weekly Sun (San Bernardino, CA.), P. 1, Sat., Sep. 19, 1896 An Altercation in Which the Aggressor Got the Worst of It A small altercation took place Monday evening on the corner of Third and E street in which the aggressor received considerably more punishment than the man whom he assailed, Otto Perdew, the barber, who had apparently been drinking, entered Hart’s cigar store, became boisterous and was ordered out. He went under protest and then stopped on the pavement and became somewhat abusive. Mr. Hart ordered him away, and stepped out onto the pavement, when he was given a heavy blow in the face. Before Perdew could make any further attacks, he was hustled into the street by several vigorous blows. A policeman appeared, arrested Perdew and took him to headquarters, where he gave bail and was released to appear this morning. In the 1898 California Voters' Register for San Bernardino, 22 yr. old Otto Perdew, b. in CA., was working as a barber and living in San Bernardino. He was listed as 5'9 1/2" tall, with brown hair and brown eyes. Riverside Daily Press (Riverside, CA.), Tues., Oct. 17, 1899 BASEBALL AND BEER Riversider Imbibes Too Freely in San Bernardino Times-Index: The baseball game yesterday seemed to have a bad effect on the town, for it has been many months since it has been on such a tear as it was last evening. Several fights occurred, while drunks were out in force. Just what the occasion was is not clear, but as at least two-thirds of the hilarity came from individuals from the surrounding towns, it would seem that liquid refreshments, served from a keg, is too strong for those in the habit of viewing the world through the bottom of a brown glass bottle. Just as the crowd was coming out of the ball grounds, Vandivere, whose home is in Redlands, but who works in Riverside, tried to pick a quarrel with a San Bernardino citizen, and just as the local man was about to disfigure the countenance of the juiced-up Riversider, the policeman took the frost belt man in tow and started for the city jail. The trip, however, was never completed, for just as they reached the corner of Third and E streets, Mayor Hanford whispered something to the officers that seemed to induce them to release the scrapper after his friends had put up $5 bail. But his troubles were not to end just yet, for as he was being marched down Third street toward D by a couple of friends, the trip passed Otto Perdew, who was standing in front of Mespelt & Oweger’s cigar store, and without any apparent provocation, Vandivere broke loose and made for the barber, asserting that he was the male offspring of a female canine. Perdew waited till the Riversider was close up, then landed a solar plexus blow that cleared the inebriate off the sidewalk. His two friends jumped in for some reason or other, and were soon landed in a heap alongside of their charge. At this juncture, the police arrived on the scene and stopped the trouble, but in the confusion, the promoter of the scrap escaped, and as the other two boys explained that they were only trying to grab their friend when Perdew got in his work, they were allowed to go. In the 1900 U.S. census, 24 yr. old Otto Perdew, b. Mar. 1876 in CA., was living in San Bernardino Ward 1, San Bernardino, CA. with his 58 yr. old mother, Annie Perdew, doing day work, b. Jun. 1841 in OH. 30 yr. old brother, Lee R Perdew, b. Dec. 1870 in CA. Otto's father was also b. in OH. Annie was the mother of 7 children, 4 still alive by this census. Annie's father was b. in SC. and her mother in VA. Annie was married in 1859 and had been married for 41 yrs. 42 yr. old Otto Perdew, a barber, was committed to Stockton State Hospital on Apr. 9, 1918 because he had been addicted to morphine and opium for the last 8 years, using 4-8 grms. daily for the past 8 years. He was discharged on Aug. 5, 1918 because it was decided that further treatment would not benefit him. His nearest relative, his sister, was listed as Mrs. F. E. Moore of 870 Court St. in San Bernardino, S.B., CA. According to his Sep. 13, 1918 WWI Draft Registration card, 42 yr. old Otto Perdew, b. Mar. 20, 1876, was living in Tonopah, Nye, NV., and working as a barber. His nearest relative was listed as (his sister, Hattie) Mrs. F.E. Moore, living at 890 Court St., San Bernardino, San Bernardino, CA. He was described as being of medium height and build, with brown eyes and gray hair, with no physical disabilities. In the 1920 U.S. census, 42 yr. old Otto Perdew, a single man, b. abt. 1878 in CA., was working at a barber shop and rooming at a boarding house in Tonopah, Nye, NV. with approx. 50 other people. Otto's parents were both born in IA. J. B. Gill yesterday secured the folder and will suggest to the chamber of commerce that it re-photographs the views. Included in the folder is a bird’s eye view of the city as it was in 1887. Another view is from the tower of the old courthouse, revealing homes rather than business houses along E, Court and Fourth streets. Many of the well known early day homes of the city are distinguishable. John Anderson identified many of them yesterday. One of the interesting views is that of a group of artesian wells showing the water shooting apparently eight or 10 feet above the casings. The folder referee to the “colonies of Redlands, Highland, Crafton and Lugonia.” The booklet was put out by Ward Brothers of Columbus, Ohio. In the 1930 U.S. census, 53 yr. old Otto Perdew, a single man working as a barber at a barber shop, b. abt. 1877 in CA., was living at 880 Court St. in San Bernardino, San Bernardino, CA. with his 63 yr. old widowed sister, Hattie Moore, b. in CA. Otto's and Hattie's parents were b. in OH. Hattie was 18 yrs. old at the time of her marriage. In the 1940 U.S. census, 64 yr. old Otto Perdew, a single man, b. in CA., was lodging at The San Bernardino County Old Men's Home at 850 East Gilbert St. in San Bernardino, San Bernardino, CA. He was living at the same place in 1935. Otto died in the San Bernardino County Hospital in San Bernardino, San Bernardino, CA. of extensive bronchopneumonia on Dec. 10, 1949.
