Officers Ketring and Starke swooped down upon a hop joint that was running on full-time down on lower D street, late last evening, and before the minions of the law had finished their business that "palace of Hazy dreams" resembles the meeting place of a Democratic caucus. Four inmates, who gave names of Ed Boehm, Lee Perdew, Bert Hadley and Charles Hart, were corralled together with an opium smoking layout that would bring much joy to the heart of a "Boxer". (Note: A Boxer here refers to a member of a Chinese secret society.) The rendez-vous had been under the espionage of the officers for some time and they believed that it was about time for plucking last night and arranged their plans accordingly. The smokers' dreams were evidently rendered more violent and lurid by wholesome inroads upon a quantity of whiskey. The examination of dope and booze produced a noise that severely grated upon the ear of near-by residents and led to their being raided. On Dec. 4, 1917, according to San Bernardino County Marriage records, 46 yr. old Robert Lee Perdew, b. in CA. and a resident of San Bernardino & 36 yr. old (Mrs.) Alice Mae Cushing, b. in MO., and a resident of San Bernardino, were married by Edward Wall, Justice of the Peace. Witness: W. L. Purciel, a resident of San Bernardino. Alice married (possibly third), Wilfred William Cushing. Previous married names may have included Barrett or Riedell, according to the WI. Marriage Index. - but her maiden name appears to have been Shaffer. Alice was the daughter of Alexander Robert Shaffer and Lydia Belle Ramsbottom. She is also listed as Alexander Shaffer's daughter in his obituary as well as Lydia Belle Shaffer's daughter in her obituary and Sam and Ogle Shaffer's sister in their obituary. San Bernardino Daily Sun (San Bernardino, CA.), P. 6, Col. 3 Thu., Dec. 6, 1917 Wedding Result of Summer Romance - As a result of a meeting at the Shay ranch in Big Bear valley during the summer, a romance culminated in a wedding at the home of Justice Edward Wall who united in marriage Mrs. Alice May Cushing and Robert Lee Perdew. After a short wedding trip Mr. and Mrs. Perdew will make their home at 866 Fourth street. Both have lived here several years, and the groom is connected with the Pacific Electric company. Note: Alice was b. Jan. 3, 1880 in MO. and d. Apr. 5, 1961 in Los Angeles, CA. San Bernardino Daily Sun (San Bernardino, CA.), P. 8, Col. 5 Sat., Sep. 28, 1918 Mrs. Lee Perdew and daughter have just returned from a visit to the northern part of the state. Mrs. Perdew is the wife of a well known Santa Fe man. According to the 1917-1922 Great Voter's Register for San Bernardino Precinct 9, Lee Perdew, a machinist and Mrs. Mae Perdew, a dressmaker, were living at 866 Fourth St. They were both listed as Republicans. According to the 1930 U. S. census, 44 yr. old May "Purdew", b. in MO., was married and a landlady in a boarding house - but her husband, Robert was not listed as living with her.
