Description	:	1769 Portolá Expedition 1781 Los Angeles Poblador Escolta Pablo Antonio Cota y León was the son of soldado Andrés Cota and Angela León. Pablo enlisted as a soldado de cuera (leather jacket) at Loreto Presidio, Baja California, on July 4, 1768. In March of 1769 he traveled with the Portolá expedition to San Diego. Read More	1769 Portolá Expedition 1781 Los Angeles Poblador Escolta Pablo Antonio Cota y León was the son of soldado Andrés Cota and Angela León. Pablo enlisted as a soldado de cuera (leather jacket) at Loreto Presidio, Baja California, on July 4, 1768. In March of 1769 he traveled with the Portolá expedition to San Diego. Cota was with the second land party that discovered the Port of Monterey in May of 1770. Pablo Cota was stationed at the Presidio of Monterey from 1771 to 1774. In 1774 he was promoted to cabo (corporal) and posted as an escolta at Mission San Luís Obispo de Tolosa. He was still there when the Anza Expedition arrived at the mission in March 1776. Pablo Cota married Rosa María Lugo y Martínez at Mission San Luís Obispo de Tolosa November 30, 1776 (SLO Marriage 00050). Cabo Pablo Cota was transferred to the mission guard (escolta) at Mission San Antonio de Padua in 1778. Governor Felípe de Néve promoted him to sargento while he was serving as an escolta at Mission San Gabriel in 1781. Sargento Cota escorted the Los Angeles pobladores to the Plaza de los Angeles and was present at the founding of the City of Los Angeles on September 4, 1781. Sargento Cota was transferred to the company formed to establish a new presidio at Santa Bárbara and was placed in charge of the escolta that was present at the founding of Mission San Buenaventura March 31, 1782. With the founding of the Presidio de Santa Bárbara on April 21, 1782, he was formally appointed as Sargento de Compañia (First Sergeant) of the Presidial Company of Santa Bárbara. In March of 1788 Sergeant Cota was present at the establishment of Mission La Purísima Concepción outside what is now Lompoc. He was promoted to Alférez (ensign/subaltern) that same year. Cota supervised construction work at Mission La Purísima and served as paymaster at the Presidio de Santa Bárbara in 1792. In 1793 Cota supervised the construction of a crossing on the Pajaró River (near Watsonville). Alférez Cota inspected the escoltas at various missions and served as acting commandant of the Presidio de Santa Bárbara in 1797. He headed a survey party for Mission Santa Inés in 1789. Alférez Pablo Cota y León died at Santa Bárbara December 30, 1800, and was buried in the Presidio Cemetery December 31.
