San Bernardino Daily Sun (San Bernardino, CA.), P. 1, Col. 5 Thu., Sep. 21, 1916 PARLEY HEAP, SR., IS CALLED BY DEATH Injuries in Fall From Tree Prove to Be Fatal For Head of Big Family Parley Heap, Sr., age 84, pioneer miner, freighter, cattleman and well borer, died here last night after a residence of 62 years. He bored the first well that tapped the artesian flow of San Bernardino valley, and led one of the most active lives of the frontier days. He was typical of the early days of the west. A fall from a tree on Monday morning fractured his shoulder, and the injuries that at first were not regarded as particularly critical caused his death shortly after 9 o'clock, as he took a sudden and unexpected turn for the worse. He died at the home of his son, Police Judge Harry R. Heap, at Fifteenth and A streets, which had been his home for a year. The pioneer began to fail about five years ago, when he was assaulted by a highwayman. He climbed into a tree Monday to trim its branches. Mr. Heap was the head of one of the most widely known families of the city. He was the father of Parley Heap, Jr., George E. Heap, Mrs. Joseph Dempsey, W. H. Heap of Los Angeles, Walter J. Heap, Harry R. Heap and Mrs. C. V. Kelty. He was a brother of James Heap, Mrs. Webster Vale, Mrs. Jennie Mogeau, Mrs. Nathan Keller, Joseph Heap of Riverside, Mrs. Pierce Dunlap of Rialto and Fred Heap of the mountains. Other members of the family live in Utah. Mr. Heap was born at Lancashire, England in 1832. With his parents he came to America, arriving finally in San Bernardino in 1854. During his early residence here he lived on the Heap ranch to the east of San Bernardino. In the days long before the railroad, Mr. Heap freighted across the desert and mountains from Salt Lake to Los Angeles. He was a successful miner, having served as foreman for the famous silver mine of Governor Waterman near Barstow, and prospected over many miles of the Mojave desert. He handled cattle in the San Bernardino mountains, and for many years during the early days of water development bored artesian wells. His memory of the early conditions contributed to San Bernardino's case in the recent water litigation. In many parts of the southwest for over three score years, the name of the pioneer was known. His wife was Mrs. Eliza Bottoms Heap, who died a number of years ago. The funeral arrangements have not been made. The Mark B. Shaw company has charge.
