Our community was startled about noon today by the announcement of the death of Patrick Morgan, of Carroll township. Mr. Morgan was in Carroll only a few days ago, apparently in the best of health, as he was a man of unusual vigor and strength for one of his age. About three weeks ago he was taken with a slight attack of the grippe, the effect of which passed off in a few days and he seemed to have gained his usual good health. But yesterday morning about 2 o'clock he was taken seriously ill and one of his boys sent for the doctor. All that medical aid could do was done for him, but of no avail, and he departed this life at 10 o'clock this morning. Mr. Morgan was a man loved by all who knew him, always kind and charitable, and ready with a helping hand to assist those in trouble, He was born in Ireland in 1811 and emigrated to this country in 1844, settling in Whitewater township, Dubuque county, where he resided until the spring of 1875, when he removed with his family to Carroll county, where he has since resided. Shortly after coming to Iowa he enlisted with Uncle Sam, serving in the Mexican war. He leaves a wife and seven children to mourn his loss: Dan, at present a member of our board of supervisors; John, a farmer living in Carroll township; James J., agent of the U.P., at Beatrice, Nebraska; and Joseph, Charles, Mary and Ellen, residing at home. The grief stricken wife and children have the deepest sympathy, in this sad hour of affliction, of the entire community. The funeral will take place Monday forenoon, leaving the house at 10 o'clock and services will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic church at 11 o'clock. Carroll Daily Sentinel, Saturday, April 18, 1891. Funeral Of Patrick Morgan* The services over the remains of Patrick Morgan were held in St. Joseph's Catholic church at 11 o'clock this morning, an immense concourse of his neighbors and friends having assembled to pay their respects to his memory. Father O'Connor delivered a short, eloquent address, testifying to the high character of the deceased, as a man among his fellows, one who was esteemed for his many virtues, a man who seemed thoroughly to understand his duty to God and his fellow man. He characterized him as an honest, manly man and a true Christian gentleman, which is the very highest praise that can be bestowed. The world would be far better if there were more men in it of the kindly, helpful nature of Patrick Morgan. The church was crowded, and the long procession extending nearly from the church to the grave was but a fitting tribute of the esteem in which he was held. *Carroll Daily Sentinel, Monday, April 20, 1891
