Mrs. Schmelzer was the youngest daughter of Theodore Bearns (sic/Berns). She was born at the home of her parents in Jefferson township, Oct. 9, 1866, and married to Otto Schmelzer, April 22, 1885. The fruit of this union is one child a little over a year old, which survives her mother. Mrs. Schmelzer was a lady of many good qualities, who by her modest ways and unostentatious habits, won for herself a host of friends. She was the idol of her fond parents, pride and joy of her husband. Her remains were conveyed to the Catholic cemetery at Garnavillo, on Sunday, accompanied by the largest funeral procession that has been seen in Garnavillo for many years. The services were conducted by Rev. Father Hellrigle. May she rest in peace. +++ 1984 History of Clayton County, Iowa, pg. 650 Otto and Katherine Winch Schmelzer Otto Schmelzer was born 15 Nov. 1862, at Garnavillo, Ia., a son of Johan and Catherine Grell Schmelzer. On 16 Aug. 1894, he married Ernestine Katherine Winch (b. 21 July 1875) a daughter of Ernest and Wilhelmina Pohlman Winch of Elkport, Ia. This was the third marriage for Otto. Information on the first two are at the end of this article. Otto and Katherine farmed south of Garnavillo, the present Eugene Schmelzer farm. Their family consisted of the three sons of Otto's first marriages, and their own four children: Elizabeth (Elta) m. #1 Fred Maibauer, d. 14 July, 1967, m. #2 Albert Warren, d. 30 Jan. 1984. She lives in Pinellas Park, Fla.; Katherine (m. George Rolfes) seperate article; Harold (Harry) m. Elizabeth (Betty) Brailer, they live i Guttenberg; and Otto Jr. m. Margaret (Maggie) Thein, they also live in Guttenberg. Otto d. 20 Dec. 1939, and is buried in the Catholic Cemetery at Garnavillo. Katherine d. 8 Jan. 1960, and is buried at the Garnavillo City Cemetery. Otto's first marriage was to Heneritta Berns, a daughter of Theodore Berns. It took place on 21 April 1885. They had one son Henry (m. Katherine Eglseder). Heneritta d. 3 June 1887. Otto married Anna Lueck on 22 Feb. 1889. They had two sons. Edward (m. Ruth Demo) and Albert (m. Alvina Felder). Anna d. 22 June 1893 (sic 15 June 1893).
