JANS —At his home in Akron, Iowa, Tuesday morning, December 29,1903, Peter Jans, aged 69 years, 2 months and 10 days. Since last August deceased has been a sufferer with cancer of the stomach, that dread disease which baffles the best medical skill and to which all afflicted must yield. For a time he took treatment at hospitals in Sioux City and Luverne, Minnesota, but he returned home about three weeks ago without having received any benefit. Notwithstanding a strong and vigorous constitution and the kind and loving care bestowed upon him during the last days, he soon succumbed under the weight of advanced years and other complications, passing to the world beyond on Tuesday at 9:30 a. m. Peter Jans was born in Nackenheim, Hessen, Germany, October 19, 1834. At the age of twenty years he immigrated to this country, locating at New Orleans, Louisiana, and engaging in the trade of a boatsman. Three years later he went to Elmhurst, Illinois, and was united in marriage with Miss Minnie Albert. Four years after marriage he was among the drafted soldiers called upon to fight for their country's cause in the Great Rebellion, and he served as a true patriot to his adopted country until, at the close of the war, he received an honorable discharge. After the war he moved, with his family, to Wheatland, Clinton county, Iowa, and, after some period of residence there, settled on a farm in Johnson township, this county. A few years ago they came to Akron. He engaged in the harness business here and established a good trade, but decided to retire after about a year's time. Deceased is survived by his wife, who was a faithful and constant helpmate to the last. To them were born fifteen children, nine of whom are living and were present during his last hours. There are three daughters, Mrs. Win. Frisky, Mrs. Paul Utesch, Mrs. Chas. Utesch, and six sons, Martes, Fred, Charlie, Frank, Gust and Edward, all of whom live in Akron and vicinity except Fred, Frank and Charlie, who reside near Luverne, Minnesota. Mr. Jans lived a life of devotion to his family and loyalty to his friends and country. He was a good man in every sense and this community extends its sincere sympathy to those near and dear to him in their bereavement. Funeral services were held at the M. E. church today (Thursday) at 1 p.m., conducted by Rev. A. C. Martin, of LeMars, and Rev. Frank L. Moore, and were largely attended.
