Those surviving are his wife Zwannetta Visscher Dykstra; three sons, Elmer of Pella, Paul E. of Pella, Jerald R. of Monroe; two daughters, Viola Dykstra Vander Linden of Pella, and Bernice Dykstra Erickson of Des Moines; one brother, Dick Dykstra of Oskaloosa; seventeen grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jan Petrus and Paulina Gerrit Ruisch Dijkstra; one infant son; three brothers, Gerritt, John Woodrow, and William J; and two sisters, Dirkie Dykstra Poelstra, and Jennie Dykstra Lecocq. BIOGRAPHY Pieter (Peter) John Dykstra the seventh and youngest child born to Jan Petrus and Paulina Gerrits Ruisch Dijkstra, was born in Oostrum, Municipality of Dongeradeel, Province of Friesland, Netherlands at 3:00 p.m. on Feb 23, 1887. [Peter's birth was recorded in the community of Oostdongeradeel in Friesland Province, Netherlands.] In May 1888, Jan, age 44, his wife Paulina, age 43, and their seven children, Garrett 18, Jan 17, Willem 15, Dirkje 12, Jennie 10, Dirk 8, and Pieter age 1, left Friesland for the U.S. because it was too hard to make a living in Holland, and they wanted to make a new start. The trip on the Atlantic Ocean was very rough. The family was on the ship for three weeks. Many times a bad storm would come up and they would be blown back as many miles as they had traveled the day before. Storms came up quickly and without warning, causing waves to wash over the ship. They were afraid of sinking, for the ship would tremble and shake. There was lots of crying, praying and seasickness. For food they had cattle they had brought with them on board and would butcher as needed. [The ship sank on its next voyage across the Atlantic.] When they landed in New York City, people offered to help them by carrying their luggage, but they refused because they did not understand, and thought they were trying to steal from them. From N.Y. they traveled by train to Keokuk, Iowa, then to Eldon, Iowa and finally arrived at Pella, Iowa on June 10,1888. After settling in new home, they worked to pay back the friends who had sent them money to make the trip. They sometimes worked for a mere $42 a year. Times were very hard. Some employers paid in meat and some in produce. After harvesting the crops, they would cut timber for firewood and fence posts, and split rails for corn cribs. In May 1888, at the age of one year, Peter John Dykstra left his home in Friesland and came to the U.S. with his parents, four brothers and two sisters. After a three week Atlantic voyage they landed at New York City, then traveled by train, first to Keokuk, Iowa and then to Eldon, Iowa. On June 10, 1888, the Jan Dykstra Family arrived and settled at Pella, Marion County, Iowa. On Feb 26, 1913, Peter John Dykstra, age 26, married Zwannetta Visscher, age 20. Zwannetta was the daughter of John and Hendrika (Rika) Overbergen Visscher. Zwannetta was born Dec 16, 1892 on a farm east of Pella in Marion County, Iowa. To this union, six children were born. Pete lived his entire life in the Pella area where he acquired his education and where he spent his life's work as a farmer and mason. Pete was associated with the Third Reformed Church of Pella.
