Westrum Peter O. Westrum, son of Olof and Carrie Westrum, was born in Alfta, Hälsingland, Sweden, Sept. 27, 1867, and passed away in the Oscar Johnson Nursing home at Fort Dodge, Oct. 22, 1948, at the age of 81 years and 25 days. In 1868, at the age of nine months, he came with his parents to America, coming to Hamilton county some time later. Although he was baptized in the State church as an infant in Sweden he never united with a church in this country. However, he gave testimony of his faith in the living Christ. He lived near and in Stratford all his life except for three years during which time the family lived at Marshalltown, Iowa. He received his education there, and in the rural schools near Stratford. On January 20, 1909, he was united in marriage to Rowena Calderwood of Westside, Iowa. She passed away May 17, 1916. On June 16, 1920, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Margaret Gilbert, of Nevada, Mo. She passed away Sept. 12, 1930. Also, preceding him in death were his parents, two bothers, Nels and Jonas Westrum, and two sisters, Mrs. Alfred Johnson (Anna) and a baby sister. The deceased was an honest, upright citizen and neighbor. He could be called a pioneer as he lived and shared the hardships of changing the raw prairies and waste-land of this community into what it is today. He leaves to mourn his passing, one brother, Olof O. Westrum, and two sisters, Mrs. Emily Neese of Stratford, Iowa, and Mrs. Theodore Carlson of Webster City, Iowa, several nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. "There's an open gate at the end of the road Through which each must go alone. And there is a light - we cannot see. Beyond that gate your loved ones find happiness and rest; And there is comfort in the thought that a loving God knows best." Last rites were held Sunday afternoon at 1:30 in the Jackson funeral home and at the Baptist church at 2 o'clock, with the Rev. Arthur Westerhoff officiating. Songs for the services were sung by the Rev. and Mrs. Arthur Westerhoff, accompanied by Mrs. Norman D. Erickson. The flowers were in charge of Mrs. Roy G. Carlson and Mrs. Leonard Angstrom. After the services the remains were taken to the South Marion Cemetery where they were interred. The pallbearers were Julius Johnson, Elmo Westrum, Ransom Carlson, Ernest Westrum, Clifford Neese and Martin Westrum.
