American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars conducted services at the cemetery. Interment was in Glasco cemetery with Griffith Funeral Home in charge. James Russell Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Russell C. Johnson, was born at Simpson, Kansas, April 23, 1922. He was a normal boy, physically rugged, unusually quiet of disposition, active in school activities. He graduated from the Simpson high school, where he became extremely interested in farming and animal husbandry. He was unusually devoted to his father and mother and family. Following graduation from high school, he was getting himself well established in farming with his father when the war came. He enlisted in the army September 14, 1942, and passed the rugged training and final tests of a paratrooper. However, his ankles went bad and he could no longer jump. He then transferred to an infantry division and saw active service through both the African and Italian campaigns. Jim was then transferred to the campaign in France, where he was killed in combat on February 15, 1945, being aged on that date just 22 years, 5 months and 1 day. He is survived in his immediate family by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Russell C. Johnson of Solomon; his sister, Mrs. Shirley Baughan, Salina; and three brothers, Carl of Stafford, Kansas, and Ross and Jerry of the home at Solomon.
