Katheryn Ernestine "Kate" Johnson was born Aug. 10, 1898, to William Carl and Caroline Page Berneking at Simpson, Ks. She ended a long, useful, and productive life on Saturday, March 20, 1993, at the age of 94 years, 7 months and 10 days at Hilltop Lodge in Beloit, Ks. Kate spent her early years living in Simpson. She was a member of the Simpson High School Class of 1917, which was the first graduating class of Simpson High School. It was on April 25, 1921, that Kate was united in marriage to Russell "Cap" Johnson at Salina, Ks. To this happy union were born six children, James, Carl, Shirley, Olin, Ross and Jerold. Kate spent much of her life living in the country. She and her husband lived on various farms in the Simpson and Asherville area for many years until moving to Solomon, Ks. in 1942. Russell continued his farming interest, and Kate was a cook for several years in the Solomon schools. Russell entered Hilltop Lodge in 1985 and died on Feb. 27, 1987. Kate was able to maintain her home in Solomon until health forced her to enter Hilltop Lodge in 1989. A friendly and spirited person, her life centered around her family and friends. Her greatest joy in life was taking care of her family; she was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She looked forward to being with her family whenever possible. Kate also enjoyed her friends, and belonged to a Canasta Club for several years. She was a former member of the Solomon and Glasco American Legion Auxiliaries. Preceding her in death were her parents; two sons, Olin Johnson in 1931, James Johnson in 1945; one granddaughter, Nancy Johnson in 1951; her husband Russell in 1987; two brothers , Henry and George Berneking; and three sisters, Louise Stine, Lydia Berneking, and Mary Guipre. Katheryn was the youngest and last surviving child of the William Berneking family. Left to mourn her passing and celebrate her life are her children, Carl Johnson and wife Pauline, Sydney, Nebr., Shirley Reser and husband Dick, Hutchinson, Ross Johnson and wife Jane, Topeka, Jerold "Jerry" Johnson and wife Beth, Beloit, 14 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Services were by McDonald Funeral Home, Beloit, Ks.
