Description	:	Philana was the daughter of Jonathan and Catharine Scott. Philana's mother was married to George Padgett , who died in 1836, and she married Jonathan Scott on March 13, 1838, in Fountain County, Indiana. Catharine and Jonathan also had four other children: Margaret, Nathaniel, and Catharine, and Jane. Philana's husband was James P. Hardin. James and Philana are found in the 1870 Census for Niantic, Macon County, Illinois, with their two children Jephtha, age 8, and Anna, age 2. Jephtha must have been their son Burton, as the birthdate is the same. I can find no further records of them together, and I cannot find anything further on James. Obituary from "Ottumwa Courier": HARDIN–Wednesday, October 23, 1912, at 2:15 o'clock a.m. at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William E. McCoy, six miles north of the city, Mrs. Philana Hardin, aged 68 years. Funeral will be held from the Salem chapel Thursday morning at 11 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. Mr. Whitlock. A short service will be held at the residence at 10 o'clock. Interment will be made in the Ottumwa cemetery. The deceased is survived by three children: Mrs. William McCoy and Marion of Ottumwa and Burton of Farson. Mrs. Hardin has been a resident of Wapello county for twenty-two years, the family moving here from Niantic, Ill., in 1890. Obituary from "Ottumwa Courier," November 2, 1912: Mrs. Philana Hardin was born in Indiana April 17, 1844, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William McCoy, north of the city October 23, 1912. She leaves to mourn her loss two sons, Burton and Marion Hardin, one daughter Mrs. William McCoy and five grandchildren; also, one sister Mrs. Matilda Dimmitt, besides a host of friends. In July of last year she was operated on for cancer from which she obtained short relief but with the return of July, it became only too evident the dreadful disease was returning, this time with deadly force. She was confined to her bed for nine weeks, but endured untold suffering without a murmur, often saying there would be rest for her in heaven. Her campanion preceded her in death thirty-three years ago. Mrs. Hardin had been a faithful member of the M.E. Church since girlhood and of Salem Chapel for the past fifteen years. Funeral services were held at Salem Chapel Thursday, October 24, conducted by Rev. Whitlock. Interment was made in the Ottumwa Cemetery. There were many beautiful floral offerings.
