S. Marine Corps Reserve, son of William and Alice Watmore, was born October 3, 1920, at Geneva, Neb. He departed from this life February 27, 1945, at Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands. Gene attended grade and high school in Geneva, Neb., and graduated with the class of 1938. He later attended the Midwest +School of Welding at Omaha, Neb., of which he was a graduate. From there he went to Mobile, Ala., where he was employed as a welder in the shipyards for almost two years. In May, 1942, he was united in marriage with Miss Delores Pace of Geneva, Neb., and to this union on June 25, 1944, was born a daughter, Jacqueline Jean Watmore. Gene entered the service from Geneva in May, 1944, and chose the Marine Corps branch. He received his training at Oceanside, Cal., and was sent overseas to an undisclosed destination in November, 1944, with the Fifth Amphibious Corps. Geneva received the Presidential Unit Citation with ribbon bar and star, which was awarded for services on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, and also the Purple Heart medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal and the Victory medal World War II, all posthumously awarded. Gene leaves to mourn his passing his parents, William and Alice Watmore, his wife Delores, daughter Jacqueline Jean, two sisters, Margaret Tameka and Mildred Maier, two brothers, Howard S. Watmore and William R. Watmore, all of Geneva, Nebraska, and a host of relatives and friends. One brother James Willard Watmore, preceded Gene in death. Memorial services were held at the Geneva Congregational church at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 5, 1947. Rev. William G. Bohl officiated. Interment was in the Geneva cemetery with military honors conferred by the Geneva American Legion post. The body was accompanied here from the distribution center at Kansas City, Mo., by Sgt.
