Watmore was born January 16, 1926, to Alice (Stephenson) Watmore and William Watmore in Geneva and passed away on January 27, 2008, at St. Francis Hospital in Grand Island, at the age of 82 years and 11 days. Bill was one of six children in the family. Bill attended grade school at District No. 45 in Chelsea township and graduated from Geneva High School in 1943. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in August of 1943, and was stationed at Cour d’Alene, Idaho, and San Diego, Calif. He served on the U.S.S. Altamaha and the U.S.S. Layman K. Swenson, seeing action in the South Pacific, the Philippines, China, Korea and Japan. He received an honorable discharge in February of 1947, and returned to Geneva. Bill met his future wife Ramona Hlina, and they were married June 30, 1948. To this union were born three children-Mike, Kathy and Mark. In 950, they moved to the family farm east of Geneva where they lived until 1997, when they moved to Geneva. Bill was a member of the Congregational Church, serving on the board of trustees for a number of years. He was a charter member of the Geneva Grange No. 403; served as vice-president and secretary of the Farm Bureau; was a member of the cemetery board for over 20 years; school board member for eight years and a member of the Geneva Gun Club. When irrigation came to Fillmore County, Bill became active in water conservation. He helped form the Fillmore County Ground Water District and served on the board until it was dissolved by the legislature after approximately 30 years. When the Upper Big Blue Natural Resources District was formed, he served on the board while it was being organized. Bill loved the outdoors. Many weekends would find him and the boys hunting, fishing, or shooting blue rocks. He was a member of the Geneva Gun Club for many years. Every June, he and the boys could be found at Doniphan at the State Trapshoot, even bringing home a trophy or two. In 1994, he had the honor of being the State Veteran’s Handicap champion. In 1988, Bill’s wife gave him a set of golf clubs for Christmas. From then on, every chance he could get was spent at Hidden Hills Country Club with his golfing buddies. High points in Bill’s life were the family outings to state parks in Nebraska and surrounding states taken every year with the children and grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Steve, Gene and Willard; sisters, Margaret Matejka and Mildred Maier. Bill is survived by his wife, Ramona; children and their spouses, Mike and Sandy Watmore; Kathy and Mike Bowman; and Mark and Terry Watmore; five grandchildren, Lauren Watmore, Joseph Bowman, and Jessica, Steven and Sean Watmore; sisters-in-law, Patsy Dodson and Sharon Wallis and husband Bill; and nieces and nephews. Memorial services were conducted on January 31 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Geneva with Pastor Chris Lake officiating the service. Nancy Cradduck accompanied the congregation in the singing of “Morning has Broken” and the recorded selections: “His Eye is on The Sparrow,” “When I Get Where I’m going” and “Anchors Aweigh” were also played during the service. Honorary bearers for the service included Steve, Jessica, Lauren, and Sean Watmore, Joe Bowman, Herman Larsen, Lawrence Lentfer, Vern Johnson, Bob Brooke, Dick Walters, Dale Richards and Don R. Miller. Military graveside committal services were held at the Geneva Public Cemetery. The Nebraska Signal February 6th, 2008 page 2.
