D. was born near Amber, Iowa, on April 22, 1894. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Tobe Freese. He went to Camp Gordon with the large contingent of 189 Jones County men in July, 1918. He sailed from an American port for overseas in September and landed in England. The influenza epidemic was then raging throughout the war ridden countries and he was a victim. Private Freese died of pneumonia at the military hospital at Hursley Park about four miles from Winchester, England, and was buried there. He was 24 years old the 29th of late April. He was born near Amber and spent his life there, until called to the service of his country, last summer. He and his brother Carl were members of the large delegation of selectives who left this county July 25, for Camp Gordon. He was taken sick after he reached England. His brother was taken to France where he now is. The parents of this soldier boy are doubly bereaved, for their only daughter died last Sunday, as elsewhere noted in this issue of The Express. * * * * * * * * * * * * SOURCE: Lorraine Boardman - E-MAIL 11-10-2018 Hello, I am currently researching the 553+ US Service Personnel who were buried in my local Cemetery(Magdalen Hill Cemetery, Winchester, England) in 1918. According to the burial Register George F Freese died at Hursley Military Hospital aged 21 years. He was buried in consecrated ground with full military honours on 7th October 1918. In 1920 the Home Office worked with the relatives of the deceased to organise reburial elsewhere. George Freese's body was exhumed on 19 April 1920 and left Southampton on 11 May 1920 on board the Princess Matoika and arrived in Hoboken New Jersey on 23 May 1920. His remains were handed over to his Next of kin, Tobe Freese of Amber, Jones County. Iowa. I hope this information will be of help to you and others. Kind Regards, Lorraine Boardman.
