He was born Feb. 5, 1862 at Langstrasse, Ostfriesland, Germany, son of the late Dirk Nonnen Freese and wife, Anna, nee Hinricks. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church of his native land. In June, 1881, he came to the U.S.A., Jones Co., Iowa, and worked on the farm until he found in Anke Maria Schaaf a charming and faithful helpmate for life. The family lived on a farm near Monticello for one year and then for 49 years near Amber. Here seven children were born to this happy union of which three died: George in the service of his country in 1918, Mrs. Mati Osterkamp in 1918 during the Flu epidemic, and William in 1935. On Feb.25, 1936 his wish to celebrate their Golden wedding anniversary was fulfilled. Scores of friends showed the esteem in which they were held in the community. He is survived by his wife who unceasingly and tenderly cared for her husband during his long illness; four sons: Henry, Carl, John, and Hermann all living near Amber; one grandson, Elmer, who was with his grandparents almost since his birth; two brothers, Henery Freese of Monticello and Dietrich of Amber, and one sister, Mrs. Marie Husmann of Monticello. Funeral services were held at the home near Amber, Wednesday, July 15, at 9:30 a.m. and at 10:00 at the Wayne Zion Lutheran church of which he was a faithful member in word and deed. The services were in charge of his pastor, Rev. J. Willms.
